Work is performed under the immediate supervision of site management. Work involves instruction of fitness programs and exercise routines in the recreation and fitness environment to individuals and/or groups for the maintenance and improvement of physical fitness and other dimensions of wellness. - Educates and instructs students on principles of exercise and physical fitness
- Educates and instructs students on principles of hydrodynamics as applied to exercise in the aquatic environment
- Effectively explains exercise technique
- Designs safe and effective exercise routines for all ages and fitness levels
- Starts and ends classes on-time and as appropriate, maintains attendance record, and returns equipment to storage areas; assists in the quality assurance of equipment being utilized
- Remains available to answer student questions, and communicates with them in a positive and encouraging manner
- Supervise and monitor exercise participants
- Perform fitness assessments, develop exercise prescriptions and design safe and effective workout programs for a diverse population, including a variety of high risk clientele
- Effectively explain exercise technique as well as provide one on one consulting, training and motivation
- Design and implement programs to include incentive, health promotion, and other specialty programs as needed
- Perform administrative tasks associated with facility operations
- Answers questions, and communicates with clients in a positive and encouraging manner
- Professionally represents physical fitness, a healthful lifestyle and the values of the Parks and Recreation department
- Maintains equipment and helps keep records of center needs and maintenance
- Attends staff meetings and training sessions to enhance communication and job performance
- Informs supervisor of opportunities for course development, course improvement and problems as they arise
- Continues to seek out education and self-improvement activities to be able to market to center and community needs
- Nationally recognized personal trainer certification. Including, but not limited to ACSM, ACE, NASM, AFFA, ISSA, or NSCA.
- Nationally recognized fitness instructor certification according to specialty being taught. Including, but not limited to ACSM, ACE, NETA, AFFA, SCW.
- 1-year personal training experience.
- Group fitness instruction experience in specialty applying for.
- CPR-AED certified prior to start of instruction.
Education and Experience Preferred:
- Ability to perform all exercises and movements as demonstrations for clientele. Proven sales experience a plus
- Outgoing personality and excellent communication skills; superior customer service skills
- Knowledge of basic human anatomy, Kinesiology, and body mechanics specific to physical activity
- Knowledge of principles of hydrodynamics including buoyancy, resistance, drag, turbulence, inertia, surface tension, hydrostatic pressure, and the influences of body position and equipment in the aquatic environment (aquatics instructors only)
- Knowledge of teaching strategies and awareness of individual student needs
- Knowledge of choreography, cueing technique, music, tempo, rhythm, and safety
- Fitness abilities that match or exceed the class instructional level
- Knowledge of aquatic environment and aquatic center procedures
- Knowledge of first aid principles and practices
- Knowledge of exercise physiology and exercise testing and prescription techniques
- Knowledge of basic nutrition and US dietary guidelines within scope of practice
- Knowledge of reviewing general health history, screening and appropriate record keeping
- Knowledge of exercise correction techniques and how to teach appropriate form
- The ability to perform exercises and demonstrate to clients
- Ability to communicate effectively in interpreting policies and procedures
- Sales and marketing experience in personal training and programs
- The indoor environment provides for a safe and healthy work environment and is smoke and drug free. It is expected the work environment may be wet to varying degrees, and moderately humid with moderately loud sound levels to varying degrees.
- Work is performed in a fitness environment; typically, indoors in all weather conditions, with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals; is subject to sitting, standing, bending and reaching for extended periods of time; and must be able to safely pull, push, lift and carry items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Must be able to work irregular hours including weekdays, weekends, holidays and evenings.
- May be required to work immediately before, during or after an emergency or disaster.
