POSITION : Director of Finance / CFO

REPORTS TO : Executive Director & CEO

The New Britain Museum of American Art seeks candidates for the position of Director of Finance / CFO. In close collaboration with Director and CEO, and as a member of the Museum's senior leadership team, the Director of Finance / CFO provides oversight of the Museum's financial operations. JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting directly to the Museum Executive Director & CEO, the Director of Finance / CFO is responsible for the NBMAA's financial operations, including development and oversight of annual operating budget; forecasts and analyses; preparation of financial statements and annual audit data; review of payroll; administration of pension and insurance, including benefits; supervision of Finance staff; and providing support to the Executive Director and other senior leadership in the administration of the Museum's programs and human resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but are not limited to :

Finance

  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials for all donor segments.
  • Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Director and CEO; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; prepare mid-year projections; and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization's financial status, including problem areas and opportunities.
  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the Finance department's overall policy and procedure manual.
  • Effectively communicate and present critical financial matters to the board of directors, and lead the Finance Committee together with the Treasurer / Finance Chair of the board.
  • Support and advise on strategic and long-term financial planning and opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate equipment inventories for audit and insurance purposes.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, in full compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and funder requirements; liaise with external auditors and the audit committee of the board of directors; assess any changes necessary.
  • Negotiate and maintain all Museum financial contracts.
  • Manage the Museum's relationships with banks, insurance companies and other vendors.
  • Supervise the acquisition and maintenance of all Museum insurance programs, including benefits.
  • Monitor investment accounts, process fund transfers, and manage investment rate negotiations and renewals, in coordination with the Investment committee of the board.
  • Maintain accurate financial records for all endowed, invested, and restricted grants and funds to ensure honoring of donor intent.
  • Provide financial data for grant applications and interim and final reports.
  • Archive financial records in accordance with Museum, Federal, and State requirements.
  • Oversee state bond initiatives, as well as other governmental grants, for capital projects.
  • Manage depreciation and fixed asset additions and disposals, properly account for all capital investments.
  • Oversee proper financial structuring of comprehensive campaign revenues.
  • Supervise and train personnel associated with the Finance Department.
  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, bi-weekly payroll and pension submissions, benefit processing, and accrued time off, in coordination with the Museum's outsourced Human Resources administrators.
  • Report at and serve as liaison for Finance, Audit and Investment Committees.

Personnel

  • Manage compensation and benefits programs including health insurance (in conjunction with the Museum's outsourced HR consultant), 403 (b)
  • Act as Plan Administrator for 403(b)
  • Provide support to the Executive Director in the areas of payroll planning and compensation forecasts.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • At least ten years' experience in a related position, with at least three years in a management / financial position; non-profit experience preferred.
  • Experience with fund accounting systems.
  • Experience managing door-restricted funds, endowments, and grant-funded programs.
  • Knowledge of non-profit and retail accounting.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP, audits, and other regulatory requirements in the financial field.
  • Ability to execute financial reports, all aspects of the budgeting process, and financial forecasting.
  • Experience overseeing payroll and employee benefit functions.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office required; proficiency in Abila MIP, Tessitura, TAM retail, and Square systems preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven track record of leading a finance team in a complex organization, ideally within a non-profit environment.
  • Ability to think strategically and manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to professional development and staying current on trends and issues within the field of finance and non-profit management.
  • Title and Salary range : Director of Finance or CFO, $110k, commensurate with experience
