What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Tumbling and Dance Instructor position at New Canaan Community Ymca, Inc.?
GENERAL FUNCTION
To teach youth (up to age 9) tumbling, movement and dance classes at the YMCA with emphasis on fun, safety, and fundamentals of the sport.
KNOW-HOW
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Previous experience working with children and gymnastics experience (as an instructor or participant).
- Should possess great class management skills while being patient, kind, energetic, responsive, and engaging.
- Should have the ability to create and adapt lesson plans for varying ages.
- Must be comfortable with instructing caregiver/child classes (ages 1-3) as well as instructing and supervising child-only classes (ages 3-9)
- Recognize any safety concerns regarding the use of the equipment.
- Must be able to work reliably and independently with a willingness to sing and give clear directions to parents and children.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
- Be willing to take safety certification and other courses designated by Director.
- Teach classes as scheduled by supervisor.
- To be a role model for the gymnastics and movement participants while demonstrating the YMCA Four Core Values of Honesty, Responsibility, Respect, and Caring.
- Take an active and playful approach in implementing age-appropriate curriculum incorporating skills, songs, games, and movement activities.
- Develop daily lesson plans for each class. Note: Plans must be approved by Director.
- Supervise & instruct class participants during class.
- Plan and assist with any open gyms, or special events as scheduled by supervisor.
- Inventory equipment daily for any safety concerns.
- Report any accidents or incidents to supervisor as they occur.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Perform other duties as designated by the supervisor.
- Job Description may be changed at any time by supervisor.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to:
Climb, kneel, reach, push, digital dexterity, balance, crouch, pull, grasp,
repetitive motions, navigate stairs, stoop, crawl, lift, and sing.
The employee may occasionally need to exercise these physical labor demands:
Medium Work: exerting up to 60 pounds of force occasionally and 20 pounds of force frequently.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include:
Close/far vision, ability to adjust focus, peripheral vision, color perception, depth perception, field of vision.
Acute hearing is essential to this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
In this position, this person will not be frequently required to work in outside weather conditions.
While performing the duties of this job, this individual may occasionally be exposed to some moderate noise.
