What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vacancy 2025-26: Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (.5 FTE) position at New Canaan Public Schools?
- Provide direct and consultative services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing across a variety of educational settings.
- Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Use appropriate communication modes (e.g., American Sign Language, spoken English, cued speech, total communication) based on individual student needs.
- Adapt curriculum and materials to accommodate auditory access and language development needs.
- Assess students’ academic achievement, language development, and auditory access, and provide data-driven instruction.
- Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and outside agencies (e.g., audiologists, speech-language pathologists, interpreters).
- Provide training and support to school staff on hearing loss, communication strategies, assistive technology, and inclusion best practices.
- Monitor and troubleshoot assistive listening devices such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and FM/DM systems.
- Promote self-advocacy and communication skills among students.
- Maintain accurate documentation of student progress and services provided.
- Participate in planning and placement team (PPT) meetings and other collaborative team meetings.
- Stay current with best practices, legal requirements, and emerging technologies related to deaf education.
- Valid Connecticut State Department of Education certification in Teaching Deaf or Hard of Hearing Students (057).
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Deaf Education or a related field from an accredited program.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) preferred
- Experience working in a public school setting.
- Familiarity with inclusive practices
- Strong understanding of language acquisition and educational needs of students with hearing loss.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience with assistive listening technology and accommodations.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
