What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Facility and Grounds Technician position at New Canaan YMCA?
The New Canaan YMCA is looking for an Assistant Facility and Grounds Technician to help keep our 110,000 square foot community recreational facility operating smoothly. This is a full-time benefit-eligible position, and we are looking for a candidate interested in long-term growth with the Y.
As part of a two-person team along with the Facility and Grounds Manager, the Assistant collaborates with the management team to upgrade and maintain the most attractive, safe, and clean facility possible to provide the highest quality programs and services to our members and employees.
The Assistant Facility and Grounds Technician is responsible for the daily maintenance, upkeep and repair of the interior and exterior of the facility and its vital systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, pools). The Individual must also be able to work independently and be a self-starter, and be proficient at fielding work tickets through a facility database and controlling mechanical systems through a building management system (BMS).
KNOW-HOW
Three years of facility and grounds maintenance experience and proficiency with Building Management System software as well as facility work order/asset management software (Asset Essentials a plus). Must have familiarity with HVAC System Controls, (preferably Johnson and Distech) and pool operations. Pool Operator certification desirable.
Must have the ability to perform maintenance and minor repair of: plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems as well as irrigation and pool systems. Expertise in painting, and carpentry skills also desired. Must have experience developing and maintaining preventative maintenance schedules and working with outside contractors. Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong command of English is required.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
- Ensure safety and cleanliness of all spaces, equipment, and grounds.
- Maintain all swimming pools in accordance with Health Department standards
- Develop and implement a preventative maintenance schedule and work processes for the building and all equipment. Schedule should include maintenance tasks per season, month, week, and day.
- Maintain daily work log, report and correct safety hazards.
- Utilize technology and software (Asset Solutions, BMS, Distech and Johnson Controls) to ensure the smooth operation of the facility. Basic knowledge of Excel. Maintain and keep current on applicable safety software and technology training.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Ensure that all repairs are made in a timely manner. Empty trash from trash bins and collect and dispose of trash on property
- Solicit and manage project bids from outside contractors and vendors and make recommendations to the Facility and Grounds Manager
- Continue a good working relationship with all outside service contractors and act as a point of contact at the YMCA.
- Uphold a good relationship with Town Fire Marshal and Building Inspector to keep abreast of any building code changes or violations.
- Maintain positive relationship with members, staff, inspectors, contractors, and town officials.
- Participate in facility meetings.
- Request risk management COI and workers compensation records when engaging contractors and maintain repair records.
- Complete any required compliance training.
- Stated work hours 11:00 pm 6:00 pm and as determined by the Facility and Grounds Manager (including weekends as needed). Alternate on-call shift with Facility and Grounds Manager. This position may be responsible for 5:00 am opening of the facility as requested by the Facility and Grounds Manager.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to:
- Climb up to 40 feet.
- Kneel, reach, push, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, navigate stairs, stoop, crawl, walk, lift, talk, hear, perform repetitive motions, shovel snow, and sit.
The employee may occasionally need to exercise these physical labor demands:
- Exert 60-100 pounds of force occasionally and 20-40 pounds of force frequently.
- Acute hearing is essential to this position.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include:
- Close/far vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception, ability to adjust focus, color perception, and field of vision.
Will be required to work outside in all weather conditions.
Individual may occasionally be exposed to wet and humid environment, extreme noise, extreme heat or cold, toxic chemicals, and vibration.

COMPENSATION
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt, Hourly: $20.00- $26.00
