WHAT YOU’LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR IN THIS ROLE

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

The Packaging Purchasing Agent is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and procuring packaging materials for a company. The primary goal is to ensure cost-effective purchasing while maintaining quality and meeting production deadlines.  The ideal candidate is resourceful, decisive, and capable of driving results by asking the right questions and taking the initiative. 

 

JOB DUTIES: 

  • Identify, evaluate, and negotiate with packaging suppliers to obtain the best pricing, quality, and delivery terms.
  • Source material based on historical usage data and cross-functional input.  
  • Place purchase orders for packaging materials such as boxes, film, labels, shrink wraps, and other necessary components for various machines throughout the operations.
  • Make high-impact decisions regarding material availability, expediting shipments when necessary to meet production deadlines. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the launch of new products by ensuring timely procurement and material readiness.  
  • Work closely with production, sales, marketing, and demand planning to anticipate material needs and prevent shortages.
  • Use historical purchasing patterns and business insights to guide procurement strategies and minimize waste. 
  • Identify opportunities to enhance procurement efficiency, cost savings, and overall supply chain effectiveness.
  • Take full responsibility for purchasing decisions, proactively addressing challenges by seeking out information and driving solutions.   
  • Oversee the coordination, and movement of packaging materials across multiple plants throughout the United States.  
  • Collaborate with quality control teams to ensure packaging materials meet company and regulatory standards
  • Maintain strong relationships with existing suppliers while exploring new sourcing opportunities.
  • Evaluates and reviews bid proposals and purchase orders.
  • Specifications and inquiry preparation, purchasing, expediting, bid analysis, and invoice auditing 
  • Standard purchasing forms, including bid requests, material requisitions, purchase orders, logs, reports, trending
  • Issuing purchase order, contracts and change orders
  • Cost control, change control, and scheduling
  • Able to communicate with vendors, technical resources, and key company personnel 
  • Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals to perform the functions of the job
  • May lead and direct the work of others
  • Organizes logistics schedule to meet production demand
  • Arranges disposition of defective material
  • Maintains records of procurement activities and product inventories
  • Keep accurate records of purchases, pricing agreements, and supplier performance
  • Work with internal teams such as production, marketing, and logistics to ensure packaging aligns with product and branding requirements
  • Studies market conditions that may impact supply and price
  • Reviews and validates requisitions, receipts, and PO’s
  • Perform other duties as assigned

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in procurement, purchasing, or supply chain, particularly in packaging.
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills
  • Proficiency in procurement software and ERP systems
  • Understanding of packaging materials, sustainability practices, and vendor management
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to analyze market trends with historical data.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • High level of systems knowledge
  • Wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected 
  • Ability to work in a schedule-driven environment
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills 
  • High degree of professional integrity, ethics, and confidentiality
  • Able to thrive in a face-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and make high-stakes data driven decisions with minimal guidance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of 7 years of purchasing experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience 
  • Valid Driver License with a clean driving record
  • Proven, reliable, work history 


Preferred Qualifications:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, climb, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist.
  • Lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 20 lbs.
  • Operate office equipment requires repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time in an upright position walking on both even and uneven surfaces
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolding, using 3-point contact on a regular basis
  • Ability to stoop, crouch, and kneel on a regular basis

 

HOURS & WORKDAYS:

1st Shift – 8:00 PM to 5:00 PM; Overtime, Weekends, and Holidays may be mandatory based on business needs. Rotating workday/time off schedules may be mandatory depending on department/business needs as well.
