In accordance with the Merit System Rules and Regulations, an eligible list, which will be valid for a one-year period and which will be used to fill vacancies during that period, is being established for this classification. Only full-time, permanent, classified County employees may apply for this announcement.
EXAMINATION PROCESS: The examination process for this posting may include an evaluation of training and experience, a written examination, an oral board interview examination, a performance examination or any combination of the above in order to qualify applicants for placement on the eligible list. The eligible list will be used to fill vacancies that occur within the next year. The appropriate number of names on the eligible list as prescribed by Merit System Section 26.03.505 will be certified to the hiring department for consideration to fill the vacant position(s).

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Manages an environmental program; does related work as required.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An employee in this class performs mid-level management of an environmental program, designed to preserve and enhance water quality, air quality, open space, wildlife habitat and overall sustainability of the County. This position works under general supervision and may supervise subordinate employees.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
- Plans, coordinates, and oversees implementation of an environmental compliance, education, stormwater management, land preservation/conservation, sustainability or similar program;
- Keeps abreast of State, Federal, and local environmental regulations;
- Reviews program requirements to assure achievement of compliance;
- Develops innovative practices for public education and outreach efforts;
- Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of environmental and sustainability programs;
- Oversees capital projects designed to improve environmental quality and sustainability;
- Helps prepare budgets for program viability;
- Provides technical direction and oversight of subordinates;
- Makes periodic and special reports when required;
- Recommends and drafts rules, regulations, and standards operational procedures for assigned program areas;
- Plans, coordinates, and attends meetings and workshops;
- Promotes an ongoing attitude of dedication to excellent public service and ensures that external and internal customers are provided with the highest quality of service;
- Operates a data processing terminal, personal computer, and other related equipment in the course of the work.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: One year of experience interpreting environmental rules, regulations, standards and policies; knowledge of water quality, groundwater monitoring and remediation, land preservation/conservation, sustainability, and other environmental protection management practices; ability to design, plan, and oversee environmental and sustainability programs; ability to communicate courteously and effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to pass a Class Ill County physical examination.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental science, environmental studies, engineering, life sciences or related field and some experience overseeing an environmental program; or possession of an Associate’s Degree with major course work in environmental studies, engineering, or life sciences and two years of relevant experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
