New College is driven by a mission to be the best liberal arts college in America. New College, the nationally recognized honors college of the State University System of Florida, is an innovative liberal arts institution where students learn how to think, not what to think.

Founded in 1960, the College has garnered national acclaim for its rigorous academics as students chart their own academic course with the assistance of faculty advisors and written assessments are given instead of letter grades. Conducting research is an important part of the undergraduate curriculum at New College with each student having to complete a senior thesis to graduate.

The New College campus sits on the scenic Sarasota Bay and is directly adjacent to one of the fastest-growing airports in the nation. The region consistently ranks among the best for quality of life, featuring world-famous beaches, historic architecture, and iconic fine & performing arts institutions.

The New College of Florida Writing Program (New College of Florida, Sarasota, FL) invites applications for 3 Instructors to join our team in Fall 2025. The successful applicant will design and teach undergraduate courses in Rhetoric and Writing, primarily first-year writing. Our Introduction to Rhetoric and Writing course (ENC 1101) is taught as an introduction to the academic disciplines of Rhetoric and Writing Studies, so it is essential candidates are grounded in those fields. Applicants could also help grow our program through their work with visual rhetorics, multilingual writers, writing in the sciences, undergraduate research, and/or business/technical writing.

The successful applicant should hold a Ph.D. specializing in Rhetoric and Composition or Writing Studies and have a demonstrated record of successful college-level writing instruction, or hold an M.A. degree in Rhetoric or Composition or Writing Studies and have extensive experience teaching college-level writing. Candidates with a Ph.D. in a related field who have completed a Post-Doctorate in Writing/Communication and have extensive experience teaching first-year writing are also encouraged to apply.

In addition to experience in teaching first-year writing, the candidate should have experience with pedagogies that support: knowledge transfer (e.g., Writing About Writing, Teaching for Transfer); students who are multilingual and/or from historically underrepresented groups; and undergraduate research. Demonstrated interest in or experience with models of alternative assessment is a bonus.

Additional Information

The New College of Florida Writing Program, housed in the Provost’s office, offers a minor in Rhetoric and Writing (RaWR). We support students throughout the college with our dynamic Writing Resource Center. We provide pedagogical support to faculty through our Writing Enhanced Course initiative, as well as research support with our faculty writing groups. Our new faculty colleagues will primarily teach courses in first-year writing but will have regular opportunities (after the first year) to develop and teach courses based on their areas of expertise. Successful applicants will join a small but mighty, highly collaborative, and close-knit team.

Instructor-track appointments at New College are 10-month, NTT faculty positions with multi-year contracts, full faculty benefits including access to funding and resources for professional development, and a path to promotion. The standard course assignment for instructor-track faculty is 3/3, which also includes sponsoring Independent Study Projects during our ISP term in January. First-year writing courses are capped at 15 students. The base salary is 70K.
