Job Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, including those with developmental disabilities and autism. This position involves providing compassionate care and support to clients in various settings, ensuring their safety, well-being, and personal growth. The DSP is responsible for fostering independence while promoting social interaction and community engagement.
Duties
- Assist clients with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, meal preparation, and medication management.
- Provide patient observation to monitor clients' physical and emotional well-being.
- Engage clients in recreational activities that promote social skills and community involvement.
- Implement individualized care plans tailored to each client's needs and preferences.
- Support clients in developing life skills, such as budgeting, cooking, and self-care routines.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for clients by adhering to hygiene and safety protocols.
- Assist with heavy lifting when necessary to support clients with mobility challenges.
- Document client progress and any changes in behavior or health status accurately.
Skills
- Experience or training in dementia care is highly desirable.
- Strong patient care skills with a focus on empathy and respect for individual dignity.
- Knowledge of CPR techniques to ensure client safety in emergencies.
- Familiarity with social work principles related to supporting individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals on the autism spectrum and those with developmental disabilities.
- Excellent communication skills to build rapport with clients, families, and team members.
- Strong observational skills to identify changes in client behavior or health status promptly.
- Commitment to maintaining a clean environment conducive to client health and safety.
