What are the responsibilities and job description for the Policy Analyst position at New Destiny Housing Corporatio?
The Policy Analyst is a new position within the Advocacy and Communications Department. The role
reports to the Director of Policy and Communications and provides critical support in developing
and implementing strategic solutions to advance New Destiny’s mission. The Policy Analyst will
create advocacy materials, including reports and testimony; serve as spokesperson; and lead New
Destiny’s initiatives with people with lived experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Advocacy Strategy:
• Develop advocacy strategy and priority initiatives in collaboration with the Director of
Policy and Communications.
• Research and track legislation and budget items relevant to New Destiny’s mission at city,
state, and federal levels.
• Monitor news and stay informed of developments that may impact the organization and its
policy work.
• Author compelling advocacy materials, including reports, memoranda of support, and
testimonies.
• Work together with Strategic Communications Officer on dissemination strategy of advocacy
materials and to create related social media content.
• Testify in-person at public hearings before NYC Council and NYS Legislature.
• Support management of press inquiries and event invitations.
• Collaborate with program staff to coordinate annual recruitment of domestic violence
survivors for New Destiny’s two speakers’ bureaus, help develop curricula, and co-chair monthly
meetings.
• Work closely with the Data and Evaluation Department to identify key program statistics,
demographic information and other data elements to inform and support advocacy efforts.
• New Destiny’s lobbying activities to ensure compliance with city, state, and
federal lobbying and
ethics rules.
• Collaborate with Strategic Communications Officer to prepare PowerPoint decks, Excel models,
talking points, and other products for conferences, briefings, and meetings.
• Help organize annual symposium and other policy related events.
• Assist Director of Policy and Communications in consultant and vendor management.
Government Relations:
• Develop and implement engagement plan with city, state, and federal elected officials to
advance organization’s advocacy strategy.
• Manage relationships with key elected officials and appointed agency leaders.
• Collaborate with Development Department on legislative discretionary and capital funding
requests.
• Help manage engagement of elected and appointed officials in events, including annual
symposium, benefit, ribbon cuttings, and groundbreaking ceremonies.
Coalition Building:
• Represent New Destiny in coalitions and work groups, including the Family Homeless Coalition.
• Serve as spokesperson at rallies, press conferences, and other public events.
• Engage survivor-led groups, peer organizations, and nontraditional allies in advocacy
campaigns.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in public policy/administration, economics, or a related field. Master’s or
advance degree a plus.
• 5 or more years of experience in public policy, advocacy, or government (or a relevant
master’s degree plus 2-3 years). Experience working in domestic violence, housing, or homelessness
is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of New York City, New York State, and federal public policy, including
understanding of legislative and budgetary processes.
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice and keen perception of the racial, gender, and
socioeconomic dynamics of underserved communities.
• Proven interpersonal and collaborative skills, as well as excellent judgement and exceptional
integrity.
• Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written), with the ability to tailor messaging
to effectively address diverse perspectives.
• Problem-solver and organized self-starter, capable of operating multiple projects
simultaneously and seeing them through completion.
• Exceptional time management to ensure deliverables are completed efficiently in a fast-paced
and fluid environment.
• Thorough researcher, with the ability to quickly get up to speed on new topics and synthesize
complex information into a clear and communicable format.
• Ability to work and attend meetings outside traditional business hours.
• Ability to travel outside of New York City by car, train, or airplane.
• Professional proficiency in Spanish preferred.
Compensation/Benefits
Salary is $75,000 -$85,000 per year depending on qualifications. This is a full-time position with
a benefits package including medical, dental, vision, short disability, PTO paid holidays and 401(k).
