What are the responsibilities and job description for the Penguin Trainer (II or Senior) position at New England Aquarium?
The New England Aquarium is home to over 50 penguins, including African penguins and southern rockhopper penguins. We are currently seeking an experienced animal care professional to help care for our penguin colony, join in the development of our enrichment and training program, and aid in penguin breeding and chick rearing. Our penguin team is committed to supporting the African penguin SAFE and the SSPs for both species we house, while educating our visitors about the need to conserve their wild counterparts. This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be four 10-hour shifts. Candidates must be able to work at least one weekend day per week as well as some holidays, nights, and respond to emergencies at all hours.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Training and Experience
- Bachelor's degree with a concentration in science preferred.
- 2 years of trainer or related experience is required.
- Penguin husbandry experience is required.
- Experience with animal training is preferred.
- Experience with bird breeding and chick rearing is preferred.
- Ability to see all colors due to how we identify animals.
- Ability and willingness to work in cold water environments for long periods of time.
- Possession of or willingness to acquire an internationally recognized SCUBA diving certification.
- Ability to obtain Medical Examiner's authorization to SCUBA dive in accordance with NEAQ Diving Program.
- Valid Driver's License and the willingness to drive a 24' Box Truck.
- Ability to obtain Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Motor Carrier Safety Regulation (49 CFR 391.41-391.49).
