Position Summary
The Physical Education (PE) Teacher plays a key role in inspiring and guiding students toward lifelong wellness, physical fitness, and personal growth. The PE teacher will design and implement a dynamic physical education curriculum as part of our innovative Life Design program, emphasizing teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. The role includes teaching PE to middle school students in grades 7 and 8, contributing to the development of after-school athletic programs, and cultivating a sense of belonging while encouraging students to achieve their personal and physical potential.
The position entails a full teaching load comprising four classes with two or three different course preparations. The role includes advising a group of five to eight students, chaperoning weekend activities once or twice each term, and actively engaging in various student life and extracurricular activities. Teachers also collaborate and innovate with colleagues across different curricular areas and
divisions.
Teachers invest deeply in the school's community by participating in the advising (called advocacy at NEIA) program, contributing to social and emotional learning initiatives, attending weekly staff meetings for subject areas and divisions, and participating in extracurricular activities, such as after-school activities and clubs. The role is integral to enhancing the overall student experience,
requiring a commitment to the various facets of school life at NEIA.
Instructional Duties
● Design and implement a dynamic, innovative, and developmentally appropriate physical education curriculum for middle school students (grades 7 and 8) in partnership with the Director of Curriculum and the Life Design teaching team, ensuring alignment with NEIA’s mission and integration with the Life Design curriculum.
● Collaborate with the Lead School Counselor and Learning Engagement Lead to holistically support students' mental, social, emotional, and physical well-being within the Life Design framework.
● Use a variety of teaching strategies, techniques, and resources to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of students.
● Provide individualized, constructive feedback to students, fostering skill development, growth, and achievement in physical education.
● Facilitate active and collaborative learning experiences, encouraging students to work in teams and develop effective communication and collaboration skills.
● Foster a growth mindset, encouraging students to embrace failures as learning opportunities and to persevere in the face of challenges.
● Maintain an organized and safe classroom space, ensuring that PE equipment and facilities are well-maintained and accessible for student use.
● Participate in professional learning opportunities to enhance teaching practices and expand knowledge of physical education.
● Collaborate with colleagues to integrate physical education across the curriculum and promote cross-disciplinary learning experiences.
Athletics and Extracurricular Engagement
● Support after-school athletics by coaching or facilitating team sports, individual activities, or fitness program
● Collaborate with the Student Life and Athletics departments to enhance programming that strengthens school spirit and pride.
● Create opportunities for day and boarding students to connect through physical activities and
competitions.
The Hours of Work and Responsibilities for teaching staff at NEIA include:
● Teaching staff teach four classes each semester, typically with two or three different course preparations.
● The standard workday for teaching staff members is from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Fridays.
● Teachers are available for extra help from 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays unless they are engaged in other NEIA-related commitments.
● Attendance at all scheduled teaching staff meetings is mandatory for teaching staff.
● Teaching staff must participate in training sessions or professional learning activities, typically scheduled when the school is not in session.
● Teachers chaperone weekend activities or serve as the Adult on Duty once or twice each term.
● Participation in various school functions is necessary, including but not limited to Opening Meetings, Opening Family Picnic, Overnight Student Orientation Trip, Family Weekend, Professional Days, Dive into NEIA, Accepted Student Days, Admission Open House Events, Graduation, End-of-Year Learning Exposition, and End-of-School Meetings.
● The Head of School may assign additional duties as needed to meet the school's requirements.
