The State of New Hampshire, Department of Health and Human Services and NH Hospital has a full-time vacancy for Nurse Specialist.
Summary:
Provides professional nursing care to patients under the direct supervision of the unit Nursing Coordinator. Functions as nurse in charge when on duty. Through the use of nursing process, ANA standards of practice, nursing knowledge and skill, is able to perform varied and complex duties that will assure that patients receive the best possible care. May assume the nursing leadership role in the absence of the Nursing Coordinator. Practices within the standards of the department, hospital and regulatory agencies. Demonstrates positive customer services concepts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with major study in nursing or a related human service field. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.Experience: Three years' experience as a registered nurse in a health care facility or a related human service field working in the specialty area in which the vacancy exists. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
License/Certification:
1.Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of New Hampshire.
2. Certification by the American Nurses Association or an organization recognized by the ANA in a specialty that is consistent with the job accountabilities and appropriate to the institution or agency in which the vacancy exists.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of the theories of professional psychiatric and/or gerontological nursing. Ability to recognize health related problems. Ability to prepare factual reports. Ability to instruct and guide others. Ability to administer detailed therapeutic prescriptions. Ability to follow directions in exact detail. Responsibilities:
- Supports Nursing Leadership and Administration in the achievement of hospital, departmental and unit, mission goals and objectives as demonstrated by participation on committees at various levels. Role models appropriate staff to staff, staff to patient, and transdisciplinary communication. Demonstrates understanding and behaviors related to customer service, internal and external.
- Initiates and provides ongoing evaluation of daily patient care assignment based on identified acuity and available staff skill mix. Responds to changes in patient status making changes in patient care assignment as appropriate.
- Performs and supervises procedures requiring specialized ongoing consultation. Provides leadership and clinical assistance to nursing personnel as demonstrated by oversight of clinical milieu and participative role modeling.
- Supervises, teaches, assists and participates in the application of the nursing process as evidenced by carrying a caseload of patients.
- Utilizes nursing process in assessing patient status and behavioral patterns to provide a safe and therapeutic environment to facilitate optimal patient treatment outcomes. Assures the integration of nursing care goals and interventions within the patient's interdisciplinary treatment plan. Assists Coordinator in oversight of nursing documentation requirements by making sure nurses are assigned to teams daily.
- Takes an active ongoing role in providing direct patient education and consults with other professional nurses in providing education to patients and internal support persons via the use of existing and newly developed patient teaching protocols.
- Serves as the identified preceptor in the partnership program to assure smooth transition of new staff to patient care unit.
- In collaboration with the Nursing coordinator, demonstrates an ability to identify problematic employee situations, utilize conflict resolution techniques, support the concept of customer satisfaction and promote CQI efforts.
- Participates in CQI and research activities, demonstrates active role in hospital and/or departmental committees assigned by nurse manager and maintains ANA certification in clinical area. Coordinates and participates in unit-based in-service programs.
- Actively participates in academic course work, seminars and/or training programs to enhance professional development.
- Performs other related duties as negotiated with Nursing Coordinator.
Supervisor’s Workplace Safety Accountabilities
Ensures compliance with established hospital and departmental safety policies and procedures by:
- Maintaining competency in hospital approved Crisis Management Program (CMP) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques for adults, infants, children and AED training.
- Conducting periodic (minimum quarterly basis) on site reviews.
- Completing competency-based review, when applicable.
- Providing on the spot reinforcement/training on safety issues; referring staff to formal training programs, as appropriate.
- Recording safety related initiatives for annual reporting.

- Participates in the formulation of the mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives for the Department. Carries out same by acting as an agent of the Department within the hospital. Supports the organizational mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives as demonstrated by a positive leadership presence in unit based, departmental, hospital wide, or in public meetings/committees.
- Participates in the process of continuous quality improvement by supporting unit‑based quality improvement activities. Demonstrates commitment to customer service values in professional conduct and by promoting such values in assigned staff.
