The State of New Hampshire, Department of Health and Human Services, and New Hampshire Hospital has a full-time vacancy for Occupational Therapy Assistant I.
Summary: To assist in developing and implementing occupational therapy treatment programs, under the supervision of and partnership with an Occupational Therapist, to promote patients’ independence and engagement in basic and instrumental activities of daily living, rest and sleep, vocational, play/leisure activities, and social participation and to aid in patients’ limitations due to physical, sensory-perceptual, psychosocial and cognitive capabilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major study in occupational therapy assistant, certification through the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy and licensure or application for licensure as a COTA. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.Experience: Two years of experience within a related educational, counseling, allied health, in-patient or community-based setting working with individuals or persons with disabilities.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
- Possession of licensure or temporary license as an Occupational Therapy Assistant by the NH Allied Health Professionals Governing Board for Occupational Therapy, and certification by the National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and successful completion of Defensive Driving Course within first six months of employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1) Satisfactory completion of specified written and physical components of the Mental Health Worker Training Program within first four weeks of employment at New Hampshire Hospital.
3) Must be able to perform continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending or lifting as well as performing work activities which require fine manual dexterity or coordination.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge and experience with psychiatric population.
Responsibilities :
- Implements patients' individualized treatment plan as established by the primary Occupational Therapist. Selects and applies occupational therapy interventions and equipment consistent with the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant's (COTA) delegated responsibilities via individual and/or group programs to ensure optimal patient performance.
- Contributes to the occupational therapy assessment process through observation, verbal and written reports. Provides relevant clinical documentation to the Occupational Therapist through assessments to assist in transitioning or discontinuing patients' occupational therapy treatment plans.
- Administers and updates Initial Rehabilitation Department Screening Assessments, documents general (non-OT) Department treatment plan interventions and completes patient schedules to support participation in general programming according to established Rehabilitation Department standards.
- Instructs patients, families and other caregivers in the skills and techniques of the occupational therapy treatment program under the supervision of the Occupational Therapist.
- Plans and implements general Rehabilitation Department programming with patients and documents related notes and conducts related therapeutic activities which support the overall function and effectiveness of the Rehabilitation Department.
- Collaborates effectively with multidisciplinary team members and corresponding Rehabilitation Departments via active communication and thorough documentation of occupational therapy services to facilitate high-quality, interdisciplinary patient services.
- Performs and promotes continuous Quality Improvement and Appropriateness activities to monitor and improve aspects of care and demonstrate a commitment to core customer service values.
- Maintains clinical treatment areas and equipment to ensure all are free of hazardous elements, meet optimal therapeutic conditions, and ensure that supplies are sufficient to meet patient and program needs.
- Participates in continuing education activities relevant to the diverse needs of the patient population and to keep current on new skills, knowledge, and practices in the field and for licensure.
- Supervises and trains Department staff to include volunteers, interns, and students in clinical and technical aspects of therapeutic duties to ensure high-quality services are developed and meet diverse population's needs.
