Summary:

The Senior News Editor helps shape NHPR's journalism strategy, both online and on air. They are an experienced journalist who plays a key role on the newsroom's editorial team, working with reporters and across content teams to ensure NHPR's journalism is timely, useful, and engaging. They manage and edit a small team of reporters and work closely with the News Director and other newsroom leaders to seek out ways to push our journalism into new, creative and impactful directions. The position reports to the News Director and is based in our newsroom in Concord, NH.

New Hampshire Public Radio is an independent and trusted source for news and information, and the state's largest radio news service. NHPR's newsroom, digital team, and original programs consistently earn national recognition for their in-depth reporting and production. NHPR is the winner of multiple National Edward R. Murrow Awards for overall excellence from 2015 through 2023 and a finalist for the 2024 Pulitzer in Audio Journalism. We have over 23,000 member households, over 60% of which are sustaining members. 

This is a full-time, exempt, on-site role based in Concord, NH, reporting to the News Director. The starting salary range for this position is $75,000 - $95,000 based on experience. We also consider internal equity, among other factors, when deciding compensation.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Work in conjunction with the News Director and other news editors to plan NHPR's daily and long-term news coverage and publishing strategy.
  • Manage and edit a small team of reporters; assign daily stories and features to that team and work to bring them to publication/broadcast.
  • Edit and publish stories on NHPR.org and for broadcast, including newscasts and audio stories, digital projects and features, and "baking in" digital plans at the outset of reporting including social media presentation.
  • Pitch, develop and manage occasional special projects and series, overseeing newsroom teams working towards a common editorial goal.
  • Collaborate with the News Director on publishing external content (such as NPR, New England News Collaborative, Granite State News Collaborative, etc) to NHPR.org.
  • Work with NHPR's audience team to ensure our digital stories reach large and diverse audiences.
  • Ensure that our journalism adheres to the highest ethical standards and practices.
  • Act as a face of the newsroom to external audiences as needed.
  • Participate in on-air fundraising as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience:

We're looking for someone with...


  • Minimum of 7 years of journalism experience. Broadcast journalism experience is desirable.
  • Ability to write quickly for broadcast.
  • Prior editing experience strongly preferred.
  • Comfort working in a digital newsroom.
  • Ability to manage a team of reporters in a hybrid environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Technologically versatile with a willingness to expand skills. Multimedia skills, including experience in producing or editing digital media as well as audio is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of relevant FCC rules and regulations.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related subject area or relevant experience.

Compensation & Benefits:

This is a full time, exempt position and the salary range for this role is $75,000 to $90,000 annually.
