Position Information
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for a Crimes Analyst. Serving at the will of the elected Sheriff, this position researches and analyzes crime data applying complex technical, scientific, or mathematical concepts and using statistical computer software to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization. Typical duties include the following:
- Collects, researches, disseminates, and analyzes data to provide pertinent information regarding crime patterns, trend correlation, and related suspect data for NHSO with an emphasis on communicating clearly and concisely.
- Provides support to all administrative and operational units in the department through the dissemination of pertinent crime and intelligence data and information.
- Produces detailed analytical reports for various divisions, individuals, and external agencies by extracting data from a records management system using SQL techniques.
- Analyzes and summarizes data and offers opinions regarding criminal trends and activities.
- Gathers local crime reports from all sources and analyzes data.
- Creates crime maps using GIS showing relationships between geography, crime, and trends.
- Maintains detailed computer databases.
- Oversees the development and maintenance of all department intelligence files.
- Creates and prepares analytical products for Patrol Officers, Command Staff and Detectives.
- Attends area meetings with outside agencies to share information about crimes and gleans area crime trend data.
- Prepares data for presentations to staff, civic groups, and for court proceedings.
- Monitors several social media platforms and informs the Sheriff's Office of concerning events, community gatherings and protests.
- Conducts and participates in a variety of training programs to increase job proficiency.
- Performs a variety of technical tasks in support of the department.
- Serves as System Administrator for multiple software applications.
- Serve as Field Liaison Officer for ISAAC. , responsible for data collection, evaluation and collation of crime statistics including the NHSO Annual Report.
- Assists Detectives in collecting intelligence on suspects.
- Assists internal affairs with confidential investigations involving computer activity of personnel.
- Attends Inter-agency meetings for the purpose of sharing pertinent information.
- Builds collaborative partnerships internally and externally to enhance intelligent services.
- Performs work with regular and predictable attendance, consistently meeting the scheduling needs of the position as required by the county.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
Expected work hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday; however, must be available to work alternative hours based on the needs of the department. Must be available to report for emergency work assignments during emergency situations.
Salary Information:
The hiring range for this position begins at $59,168. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Crime Analysis, Criminology, Intelligence, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field, and two (2) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Knowledge of Criminal Justice, Crime Analysis, Intelligence, Statistics, and Computer Science fields; supervisory principles; highly technical software applications such as GIS, CAD, or SPSS.
Skilled in writing reports; analyzing statistical data; training employees; operating computers and related software applications; using office equipment; supervising and evaluating employees; reading a map; communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Licenses/Certifications
Valid Driver's License and good driving record. If the Driver's license is outside of NC, a valid NC Driver's license is required by the first day of employment.
