New Hanover County Public Library seeks a customer-focused, team-oriented Library Assistant to provide cordial and proactive patron assistance at our Main Library in downtown Wilmington. As the primary point of contact for library services in a diverse urban environment, the position requires a confident and flexible approach to patron engagement.

Essential duties include, but are not limited to:- Providing assistance to children, teens, adults and senior citizens in the effective use of the Library collection, facilities and services
- Helping customers navigate library policies and procedures
- Guiding customers through registration and checkout processes using the integrated library system (TLC)
- Responding to reader advisory and general reference questions by accessing a variety of print and non-print resources
- Guiding customers in the use of essential technological devices and equipment in order to access library resources
- Providing support in checking out and downloading e-content
- Creating attractive and timely displays featuring library resources
- Operating and troubleshooting self-check machines, printers, computers, and other library equipment

Varying day shifts Monday through Friday; includes two evenings per week; Saturdays and Sundays in assigned rotation. Must be available during emergency situations.

Salary Information:
The hiring range for this position is $36,325.00 - $49,038 annually. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Minimum Qualifications:
- An Associate Degree and one year of library, bookstore or other frontline customer service experience
- Alternatively, individuals may possess training and experience equivalent to the above, as well as demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the essential duties of a Library Assistant.
- Intermediate to advanced skill in personal computer operations, learning and utilizing software applications and operating peripheral equipment
- Ability to interact courteously and professionally with the public, coworkers and others in a fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to respond appropriately to information-seeking behaviors and diverse learning styles.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, work independently, and exercise judgment in resolving customer issues.
- Flexibility and willingness to adjust to a constantly changing work environment.
- Personal experience using a public library
- Bilingual English/Spanish

Physical activities and demands:
- Spends up to several hours a day in a stationary position to assist customers
- Frequently moves and positions bins of books which weigh up to 30 pounds
- Frequently transports large numbers of books to various locations in the building
- Positions, places, and removes books and other library materials around, onto, and from shelves at a wide range of heights
- Communicates and exchanges information and ideas with customers and coworkers throughout the workday
- Operates a computer, cash register, and other electronic devices throughout the day
