New Heights was founded in October 2005 as an independent non-profit organization in New York City. Our mission is “to educate and empower promising underserved youth to be leaders, champions and student-athletes by developing the skills necessary for success in high school, college and life.” We are located at the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Our facility includes three basketball courts, three classrooms, offices, tutoring rooms, and meeting spaces.
Summer Academy Overview: New Heights Summer Academy is a transformative 4-week program (July 7th - August 1st, Monday-Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm) for rising 5th-8th grade student-athletes. This comprehensive program integrates academic enrichment, social-emotional development, and basketball training, providing a holistic summer experience. Mandatory staff training will be held July 1st - 3rd.
Position Summary: We are seeking dedicated and enthusiastic Summer Academy Team Leaders to mentor and guide a cohort of 15-20 student-athletes. You will play a crucial role in creating a positive, engaging, and supportive environment that fosters academic, athletic, and personal growth.

Primary Responsibilities
Leadership & Mentorship
- Co-lead and mentor a cohort of 15-20 student-athletes.
- Prioritize the health and safety of all participants.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, fun environment encouraging participation and emotional well-being.
- Proactively address student concerns with sensitivity and escalate issues as needed.
- Maintain consistent punctuality and attendance (8:30 am - 4:30 pm daily).
- Provide timely and effective communication with New Heights staff and leadership (phone, email, text).
- Support daily program operations and ensure smooth transitions between activities.
- Collaborate with educators to support the delivery of engaging academic enrichment activities.
- Assist in facilitating dynamic basketball sessions focused on skill development and teamwork.
- Demonstrated commitment to youth development and educational excellence.
- Experience playing or coaching basketball.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Emotional maturity, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to create a supportive and inclusive environment.
- Successful completion of a background check.
- $3,000 gross stipend (pre-tax). This includes staff training (22.5 days total).
- Compensation is based on days worked; unexcused lateness or absences will not be paid.
