What are the responsibilities and job description for the Music Director position at New Hope Presbyterian Church?
DESCRIPTION
The Music Director will be dedicated to planning, scheduling, orchestrating, and performing all the musical aspects of worship services, including, but not limited to: hymn selection (alongside the Pastor); performing as the pianist while directing the Choir; recruiting, rehearsing, and directing the worship instrumentalists and vocalists. The Music Director will demonstrate successful leadership, encouragement and development of congregational singing.
The MD should be proficient in several styles of piano, especially sacred and spiritual. The choir mostly performs two-part material and we have a library of approximately 100 pieces in this format with several hundred more in SATB. In addition, we have a new baby grand Steinway piano and a 3-octave Schulmerich handbell set.
RESPONSIBILITIES
WORSHIP SERVICES
- In coordination with the Pastor, selects appropriate hymns, Psalms/Psalmodies and other music for Sunday morning worship services
- Play the piano for all worship services
- Provides leadership, encouragement and development of congregational choir
ORGANIZING, SCHEDULING, AND ORCHESTRATING INSTRUMENTALISTS AND VOCALISTS
- Recruit and develop instrumentalists as necessary to ensure excellence in worship services
- Recruit and nurture the musical gifts of all ages
- Recruits and schedules a broad group of vocalists
- Reinstitute a Hand Bell Choir using the talents of all ages
- Plans and conducts weekly Adult Choir rehearsals, and twice-monthly handbell rehearsals
ORCHESTRATE REGULAR CHOIR PERFORMANCES IN SUNDAY WORSHIP
- Orchestrate performances of the Adult Choir in worship services multiple times per month, in coordination with the Pastor
- Selects music that is appropriate for the skill level of the choir members and supports and enhances the worship readings for Sunday on which it is performed
WORSHIP PLANNING
- Meets once a month with the Pastor for worship planning
- Annually prepare and submit a proposed budget to the Finance Committee
- Plan seasonal and festival worship in accordance with the liturgical calendar
- Coordinates and reviews music service for funerals, memorials, and weddings
- Brings new, innovative ideas to include in worship services
