The Director of Nursing leads operations for multiple functions and/or facilities, including oversight of effective nursing and clinical services delivery, strategic vision, planning and execution, and resource management. Participates as an active member of the clinic leadership team; collaborates with peers to ensure optimal service delivery across the organization.

- Maintains a comprehensive understanding of organization goals, priorities and needs and clearly articulates a vision and objectives that support broader priorities and scorecard goals.
- Ensures continued development of subordinate leaders through performance management, employee engagement and a culture of respect and teamwork.
- Ensures ongoing development of subordinate leaders, staff and self through education related to quality patient care, service and goals/objectives.
- Focuses on research and evidence-based practice when designing organizational development plans and department processes; sets expectations for leaders to use benchmarks when making decisions, as well as increasing clinical competency and research knowledge.
- Supports organization and department initiatives.
- Drives the standard of service excellence throughout areas of responsibility; develops and achieves strategies that provide optimal performance in both patient and non-patient areas.
- Acts as role model for change management, providing positive and constructive feedback and conducting business with high standards in ethics, integrity and appropriate confidentiality.
- Monitors, understands and evaluates available data in order to make informed decisions and continuously look for process improvements.
- Builds/maintains an effective fiscal management structure to have a positive impact on the organization’s long-term economic value, including analyzing resource utilization and development of short and long-term budgets and efficiency planning.
- Molds processes systematically to ensure success. Oversees and drives development and monitoring of department goals, performance improvement activities, benchmark strategies and operational excellence standards.
- Ensure effective relationships. Establishes, maintains and evaluates vendor business and community relationships.
- Develops patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients’ nursing care needs or patient populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated and met.
- Responsible for systems throughput, research, magnet, and quality as they relate to nursing.
- Approves all clinical nursing policies, procedures and addendums.
- Interprets and ensures policies in accordance with state licensure regulations, legal requirements and Joint Commission, as well as other accreditation bodies.
- Provides consultative services to quality with an overall goal of ensuring consistent, integrated services with a system focus.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Master’s degree in nursing or related field preferred.
Experience: Ten (10) years demonstrating progressively responsible leadership experience roles in health care, physician practice management health system or operations management required.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Active Virginia nursing license required.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Initiative-taking strategic planner with highly developed project management skills, analytical ability, good judgment and strong operational focus. Must be a well-organized and self-directed individual. Must relate to people at all organizational levels and possess excellent communication skills. Serves as a mentor, excellent facilitation and conflict resolution skills. Experience in leadership of teams or projects beyond a departmental level required. Proficient computer skills required. Knowledge of healthcare operations, reimbursement methodologies, managed care monitoring systems, healthcare outcome measurement systems, utilization review methodology, and managed care organization operations. Senior management experience in a complex healthcare organization which supports shift from an acute care model to a continuum of care approach to healthcare delivery. Superb technical, business, and entrepreneurial skills; the ability to conceptualize information and support systems designed to integrate and coordinate financial, clinical, and managed care related data; the ability to use this information in a value-added manner with respect to the need of facilities. A demonstrated ability to work effectively with primary care and specialty physicians in the development and implementation of physician and behavioral health integration strategies.
