Job Summary:
A Medical Assistant BH Float is responsible for providing basic medical attention to patients and assessing their wellbeing as part of a larger medical team. Their duties include checking vital signs, recording a patient’s medical history, collecting test samples, maintaining patient records, and providing health education under the direction of the licensed healthcare provider.
Promotes and restores patients' health by completing the nursing process; collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary team members; providing physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families; collaborating with team members. He/ She will work as an integral part of the clinical team across psychiatric and addiction services that NHH offers to our patients.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate competency in front desk, eligibility and check out procedures.
- Conducting efficient and complete triage of behavioral health patients including placing patients in exam rooms, obtaining history and vital signs, and documenting in the medical records;
- Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand care requirements.
- Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, support to patients, friends, and families.
- Promotes patient's independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patient, friends, and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions.
- Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following NHH’s philosophies and standards of care set by state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, and other governing agency regulations.
- Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, calling for assistance from health care support personnel.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
- Perform laboratory and diagnostic procedures such as IM injections, urinalysis and electrocardiogram.
- Documents patient care services by charting patient and department records.
- Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
- Triage patients in person and on the telephone and answer telephone calls and messages within 24-48 hours.
- Complete prior authorizations for medication coverage
- Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem solving methods.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Performs special tasks assigned by the Administrator and/or the Director of Nursing.

- Insurance and medical experience preferred.
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED is required; Associates degree preferred. Completion of a program of training for Medical Assistants is required. Experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.
Experience: Previous experience in a medical or mental health setting is preferred.
Travel Requirements:
Ability to travel to satellite sites and/or off-site locations for events or training as needed.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to walk, bend, stretch and stand for prolonged periods of time.
