What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pediatric Behavioral Health Counselor position at New Horizons Healthcare?
The New Horizons Pediatric Behavioral Health Counselor (PBHC) will work as a member of the pediatric medical team and local school system to treat children, adolescents, parents/caregivers, and their families by providing patient/family-centered, culturally sensitive services.

PBHC responsibilities include:
- Provide screening, comprehensive assessment, and diagnosis of behavioral health (BH) concerns (mental health, substance use, psychosocial, developmental, relational, parenting, etc.) to identify appropriate levels of care and for team treatment planning.
- Provide effective treatment planning, consultation, and appropriate brief interventions to help children and adolescents successfully achieve their health goals.
- Assist in identifying patients, parents/caregivers, and families at risk of developing problems, and provide preventive interventions, education, and referrals accordingly.
- Plan and provide group psychoeducation and interventions to patients and parents/caregivers.
- Evaluate crisis situations and make appropriate referrals to community-based services if needed.
- Collaborate with NHH’s BH team to make appropriate referrals for case management, medication, and traditional counseling services.
- Assist the pediatric healthcare care team to develop integrated disease management approaches and patient education to improve self-management of chronic disease.
- Actively participate in meetings (team, organizational, and community-based) that support NHHs integrated pediatric BH program development, collaboration, continuity of care, and quality improvement. Identify and share prevention techniques and BH practice guidelines.
- Participate in development and administration of data and measures to assess multiple outcomes (e.g., patient and parent/caregiver, and provider satisfaction, practice efficiencies and improvement, patient health outcomes). Monitor NHHs integrated pediatric BH program, identifying recommendations for improvements and training.
School Based Services-
- Implements evidence-based substance abuse prevention program(s) in the middle school and high school grade levels.
- Conducts small groups and individual sessions with students to promote prevention of substance use. Conducts assessments and screenings to identify students at risk of substance abuse and provides appropriate interventions, as needed.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of student interactions and progress.
- Collects data and evaluates program effectiveness.
- Offers resources to parents/guardians and facilitates communication between home and school environments.
- Serves as a liaison between the school and community agencies.
- Stays informed of trends, current research, and best practices in substance abuse and prevention. Acts as a resource to administrators and staff regarding substance abuse and prevention and assists with conducting staff development activities.

- Ability to work effectively as a team, interfacing with patients, primary care providers, consulting psychiatry prescribers, case managers, school counselors, school administrators and other members of the healthcare team.
- Ability to work independently and ethically across the medical and school system.
- Maintain clinical licensure, needs and in trainings identified to increase competencies and to address emerging patient needs, and identify and earn CEUs and other training opportunities related to patient needs, competencies, gaps in knowledge, and other topics that will increase quality of care and service innovation.
- Master's Degree in Social Work, Counseling or other Mental Health related degree. Preferred provider type LCSW or LPC, License Eligible providers welcome to apply.
