Born in 2019, Sunshine Wheels is a division of New Horizons, Inc. that provides accessible transportation to individuals with mobility issues. Originally part of the transportation division serving only New Horizons Village residents, Sunshine Wheels expanded to provide accessible transportation to individuals for the Hartford Area and beyond. Sunshine Wheels provides non-emergency medical transportation for individuals in our service area on Medicaid, transportation for contracted retirement facilities, recreation transportation for New Horizons Village residents, and other privately contracted rides with a focus on customer service and satisfaction.
New Horizon’s mission is to provide affordable housing, accessible transportation, other support services, short-term and outpatient medical rehabilitation, and long-term skilled nursing in supportive communities of care and enable seniors, adults with disabilities and individuals facing challenges to achieve their goals and live life as independently and joyfully as possible.
PURPOSE OF YOUR POSITION:
Provide transportation for adults with physical disabilities or the elderly.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Safely transport individuals in specially equipped vehicles.
- Follow pre-determined transportation schedules.
- Perform daily pre and post vehicle safety check.
- Assist tenants in boarding and leaving vehicles.
- Ensure the safety of passengers by securing wheelchairs in vehicles at all times.
- Operate vehicles in a responsible and safe manner by using SAFE DRIVING TECHNIQUES. Safety belts are to be worn by both drivers and passengers at all times.
- Use vehicle radios to report progress regularly and to report problems at once.
- Report all vehicle maintenance problems or accidents to Transportation Coordinator immediately and in writing.
- Routinely clean Village vehicles inside and out.
- Keep a daily transportation log.
- Maintain a clean driving record in accordance with NHV Safety Check for Van Drivers Policy and Procedure.
- Use NHV vehicles to run village errands and/or deliveries as needed.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works in the transportation office area as well as vans and buses.
- Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours.
- Is involved with tenant and medical transportation riders.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or equivalent.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
- Must hold a current CT Public Service License in good standing.
- Must have one of the following endorsements F, S, V or A.
