PURPOSE OF YOUR POSITION
The primary purpose of your job position is to direct the total nursing care activities in the facility during each tour of duty in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations, and as may be directed by the DNS, to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.
As the Supervisor, you are responsible and accountable to carry out your assigned duties and report directly to the Director of Nurses.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Works in office area(s) as well as throughout the nursing area (i.e., medication rooms, nurses’ stations, resident rooms, etc).
- Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours.
- Is subject to frequent interruptions.
- Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
- Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset patients, family members, personnel and visitors.
- Communicates with the medical staff, nursing services, and other department supervisors.
- Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends, and holidays, when necessary. Scheduled hours may change to meet facility needs. May need to perform duties of other positions when necessary.
- Is involved in community/civic health matters/projects as appropriate.
- Attends and participates in continuing educational programs.
- Is subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, exposure to chemicals, etc., throughout the workday.
- Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
- Maintains a liaison with the residents, their families, support departments, etc., to adequately plan for the residents’ needs.
EXPERIENCE
- Must have as a minimum, one (1) year experience in a hospital, long-term care facility or other related health care facility is preferable.
- Must have training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a current, unencumbered license to practice as a RN in this state.
- Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
- Must possess accurate and comprehensive assessment skills.
- Must be familiar with drug actions and interactions.
- Must have knowledge of restorative nursing and rehabilitation policies and utilizes appropriately.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
- Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long term care.
- Must be knowledgeable in the Privacy Rule and ensure all staff comply with facility privacy practices policies and procedures.
- Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
- Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
- Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
- Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
- Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
- Must be able to communicate effectively to appropriate personnel regarding emergency situations.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
(With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices)
- Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
- Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
- Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable the senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
- Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with the patients, personnel and support agencies.
- Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times, hostile people within the facility.
- Must be able to push, pull or lift, all without restrictions up to 51 lbs. Transferring patients/residents weighing between 100 to 300 pounds is frequently required—WITH the equipment designed for that purpose. Exceptions include helping a person who can assist with the transfer or move.
- Occasionally, higher performance demands may be suddenly and inadvertently experienced in any of the push, pull or lift movements with dynamic forces up to about 100 lbs. These high performance episodes are also known as shock loading. Shock loading may occur if the push, pull or lift loads are unbalanced. This shock loading may also occur during weight shifts in team handling or repositioning patients/residents, or when a person being moved suddenly is not able to assist with a lift.
- Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents in emergency situations.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Meet the nursing and rehabilitation needs of each resident.
- Maintain current resident care plans on all residents under his/her care.
- Follow physician’s orders. Renders and/or assist with complete nursing care, treatments, dressings, and other physician orders.
- Transcribe physician’s orders promptly and accurately.
- Review patient records daily to assure accuracy and completeness.
- Document comprehensive and complete nursing notes.
- Maintain accurate awareness of residents on alert list/conduct and document RN assessments as needed.
- Document and report any unusual or significant findings; contact the physician when necessary.
- Administer medication according to procedure if applicable.
- Maintain an accurate and safe control of all drugs for which he/she is responsible.
- May scan and destroy non-controlled medication.
- Initiate any and all emergency procedures as necessary.
- Demonstrate correct safety techniques.
- Conduct oversight of Charge Nurse and CNA performances.
- Respects and takes care of facility equipment and is not wasteful of supplies.
- Complete performance evaluations of Licensed/CNA staff for review of Director of Nurses.
- Contributes to and promote positive resident and family relations.
- Follow facility policy and procedures.
- Continue growth and expand job knowledge.
- Demonstrate leadership skills.
