The New Jersey Attorney General’s office is looking for the services of part-time associate attorneys, to work on an hourly/project basis, in providing legal services to client agencies for the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Newark Practice Group – Division of Law in Newark, NJ. The position will be compensated between $48.12 to $79.11 per hour. Please note this is a part-time position that will be worked during normal business hours and limited to 944 work hours in a fiscal year (July 1st - June 30th).

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Attorney General has broad oversight of the state’s legal and law enforcement matters. As the head of the Department of Law & Public Safety, the Attorney General supervises a wide range of Divisions, Offices, and Commissions, consisting of over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants.

ABOUT THE DIVISION:

The Division of Law (DOL) serves as primary legal counsel for New Jersey state government. Generally speaking, this work takes three forms: by providing legal advice to the state’s departments and agencies, by defending the state in civil litigation, and by bringing civil lawsuits against individuals, corporations, and other entities that violate the law and harm New Jersey and its residents. Staffed by nearly 500 attorneys, DOL’s responsibilities cover a broad swath of legal issues, including those involving banking, child protection, corrections, education, environmental, finance, health, insurance, taxation, and transportation matters.

ABOUT THE SECTION:

The Affirmative Civil Enforcement Practice Group includes nine sections: Civil Rights, Consumer Fraud Prosecution, Data Privacy and Cybersecurity, Environmental Enforcement and Environmental Justice, Government & Healthcare Fraud, Labor Enforcement, Professional Boards Prosecution, Securities Fraud Prosecution and Special Litigation. These sections work to bring affirmative enforcement actions and litigation against individuals and entities that have caused harm to the State or its residents. The Sections’ diverse investigations and litigations include matters involving, for example, antitrust, charities fraud, civil rights, consumer protection, data breaches, environmental enforcement, financial fraud, fraud on the government, labor enforcement and worker protection, natural resource damages, professional discipline of licensees, redlining, securities fraud, and social media and technology platform accountability.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

Under the supervision of a Section Chief and/or the Assistant Section Chief, Division of Law, Department of Law and Public Safety will:

· Review documents received in response to subpoenas issues by the Division of Consumer Affairs and/or the Division of Law regarding gun safety and reproductive rights matters;

· Determine the application of privilege and criteria for appropriate redactions;

· Perform other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor.

· Admission to practice as an Attorney-at-Law in the State of New Jersey is required.

· Four (4) years of professional legal experience as an attorney at law of the State of New Jersey in the area of the specialty or, three years of professional legal experience as an attorney for State or Federal administrative agencies which shall have involved a significant amount of the specialized legal work, or, two years of unique specialized legal experience.

OTHER KEY FACTORS:

· Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey.

· Candidates should submit a supplemental document, included with your resume, outlining (a) litigation experience in State and Federal court; and (b) supervisory experience.

· Positions will be filled on a part-time, temporary basis. Candidates selected to fill vacancies will be limited to 944 hours of work in a fiscal year.

· Experience in transactional and counseling matters is preferred.

· All offers of employment are conditional subject to the applicant agreeing to and then passing a background check that may include fingerprinting.
