What are the responsibilities and job description for the Graduate Student Advisor position at New Jersey City University?
JOB SUMMARY :
A Graduate Student Advisor will lead initiatives intended to increase the enrollment, retention, and graduation rate of Latino and low-income graduate students as part of a Title V Grant Project : The Professional Pathways Project. The Graduate Student Advisory will lead a newly created Advocacy, Inclusion, and Support Team that will help to improve the climate and culture of graduate students and provide wrap-around services to these students. This position will support mentoring and field-based learning opportunities for graduate students, including increasing job placement rates for graduate students in need, and increasing the number of students earning market-based career-focused micro-credentials. Additionally, the advisor will help faculty increase the use of culturally appropriate pedagogy and practice.
KEY DUTIES : The Graduate Student Advisor will report to the Dean of Graduate Studies. This position will work closely with various University offices such as the NJCU Counseling Center, Office of Centralized Tutoring and Academic Support Services, the Center for Career and Professional Development, Finance, Registrar, Bursar, Enrollment Management, Colleges / Schools, and external educational partners, community organizations or grantors as requested to meet the expectation of increased enrollment, retention, engagement, and graduation rate of graduate students.
The work schedule is flexible and will include some evening and weekend hours.
KEY DUTIES INCLUDE :
1.Support the Office of Graduate Studies by leading initiatives in advocacy, inclusion and support for graduate students and by implementing evidence-based practices for advancing student success.
2.Provide direct services to students through guidance, coaching, and case management,
3.Collaborate and work closely with other offices on campus to provide the necessary student support.
4.In collaboration with the Office of the Provost, plan faculty development in asset-based, inclusive, culturally appropriate pedagogy and practices around graduate student enrollment, retention, engagement, and degree completion.
5.Working with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, design and deploy and report out on an annual culture and climate survey for the institution, particularly focused on graduate education.
6.Hold regular focus groups of graduate students each year to better understand the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and areas for improvement in terms of belongingness.
7.In collaboration with other offices, including the Vice President of Community Engagement and Student Success, plan and execute events, both in person and virtual, to enhance the connectedness of NJCU graduate students.
EDUCATION : Bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, or related field is required. Master’s degree is preferred.
EXPERIENCE : Minimum of one year’s experience working with diverse populations. Higher Education experience in some phase of the learning life cycle is preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Proficiency in case management and providing direct student support or services. Work with adult learners is preferred.
