JOB SUMMARY :

Under the supervision of a Maintenance supervisor, or other higher level supervisory official in a state department, institution or agency, does the work required in the installation and maintenance of resilient flooring; does related work as required for all types of flooring including wood, textile, stone, concrete, or ceramic. Additional job duties would include carpentry, painting, and general building repairs (as requested).

REQUIREMENTS : Prepares and repairs all types of floors, including cutting, sawing, sanding, and planning. Lays and repairs linoleum, asphalt, plastic, rubber tile, rubber matting, vinyl tile, carpeting and other floor covering.

Organizes and plans new floor installations and repair work and estimates the amount of material and time and the number of helpers needed for such jobs. Completes the installation of flexible flooring materials like vinyl, linoleum, and rubber tiles, which includes tasks like measuring, preparing the subfloor, cutting and laying the flooring, and ensuring a proper and aesthetically pleasing finish.

Removes existing flooring, leveling the subfloor, patching imperfections, and cleaning the surface to ensure proper adhesion. Accurately measuring the area to be covered, calculating material needs, and marking precise cutting lines to ensure proper alignment. Cuts resilient flooring sheets or tiles to size using specialized tools, considering design patterns and seam placement.

Applies adhesives or other fastening methods to secure the flooring to the subfloor, ensuring proper alignment and transition between sections. Trims excess material, filling gaps with sealant or grout, and addressing any imperfections to achieve a smooth and professional finish.

Understands the different types of flooring materials, their installation methods, and compatibility with various subfloors. Accurately measures and cuts flooring materials to fit complex spaces.

Has theability to work on your knees, bend, and lift heavy materials throughout the installation process. Ensures clean and precise installation with proper alignment and transitions. Identifies and addresses potential issues during the installation process. May be exposed to dust, fumes, and potential hazards associated with construction work. May require working on ladders or scaffolding in certain situations.

Makes factual reports as may be required. Maintains essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize several types of electronic and / or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

EXPERIENCE : Three (3) years’ experience involving the layout, installation, repair, and maintenance of all types of flooring.

LICENSE :  Appointees must possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES : Knowledge of the problems involved in installing and maintaining all types of resilient flooring. Ability to install all types of resilient flooring, including carpeting, linoleum, asphalt, plastics, rubber tile, rubber matting and other floor covering. Ability to make efficient, safe use of standard carpentry tools and equipment including planers, saws, sanders and other specialized tools and machinery. The ability to prepare floors for new covering including cutting, sawing, scraping, and planning the foundation and applying the proper cement or other compounds. Ability to estimate the amounts of materials needed. Ability to requisition, store and safeguard necessary materials and supplies. Ability to carry out directions. Ability to take safety precautions. Ability to assign and instruct employees and patients in the procedures and techniques involved in laying resilient flooring of varied types. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with public and private agencies involved. Ability to prepare correspondence and reports. Ability to establish and maintain essential records and files. Ability to learn to utilize several types of electronic and / or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
