JOB SUMMARY : The Center for the Arts at New Jersey City University invites applications for the position of Technical Director. We seek an experienced and dedicated professional to oversee all technical aspects of theatre productions, including lighting, sound, set design, rigging, and equipment maintenance. The Technical Director will play a critical role in ensuring the seamless execution of performances, managing technical teams, maintaining safety standards, and preserving the operational integrity of the Margaret Williams Theater (MWT) and related spaces. This is a 12-month position whose appointment will begin March 2025.
The Technical Director for CFTA’s MWT oversees the technical aspects of each project. These projects include theater maintenance and upgrades, as well as theatrical productions, concerts, venue rentals, academic events, and more. The candidate is responsible for operating, protecting, and maintaining the theater's technical assets and infrastructure, while also overseeing the different freelance technical crews, which include scenic, lighting, and sound, in conjunction with other core team members. The Technical Director works closely with the Theater Manager, Production Manager, and event directors, and reports to the Director of Theater Operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES : The Technical Director will be responsible for managing production timelines, coordinating technical staff, maintaining and upgrading equipment, and addressing safety concerns in alignment with best industry practices. Key responsibilities include Production Supervision, Design Implementation, Set and Equipment Management, Team Leadership, Problem Solving, Set and Facility Restoration, and Safety and Compliance. Candidates must provide evidence of expertise in technical theatre management and demonstrate strong leadership and organizational skills. The successful candidate will have experience managing the technical requirements of live performances and overseeing technical staff in a high-paced environment.
QUALIFICATIONS : Leadership skills, strong problem-solving abilities, professional communication and interpersonal skills, keen attention to safety and efficiency in the workspace, Computer proficiency (Outlook, Excel, Propared, etc.), ability to source supplies efficiently with regards to cost and time, ability to lift heavy objects and work at heights, and willingness to work unconventional hours. A BFA in Theatre or a similar degree in a theatre-related field is required.
