What are the responsibilities and job description for the President position at New Jersey Civil Justice Institute?
Job Summary: The New Jersey Civil Justice Institute (NJCJI) seeks a highly qualified individual to lead the organization. NJCJI is a non-partisan, non-profit organization supported by the state’s largest employers, business associations, and professional organizations. The Institute promotes a fair, efficient, and predictable civil justice system in New Jersey through strategic advocacy before all branches of state government.
Leadership and Management
- Develop and execute a comprehensive strategy for increasing the Institute’s legislative, judicial, and political impact, and growing membership and annual revenue
- Manage staff including conducting consistent performance reviews
- Manage an annual budget and oversee financial disclosures and tax filings
- Serve as a thought leader on civil liability issues
Advocacy
- Serve as the chief advocate for civil liability reform in New Jersey
- Lobby the state legislature, executive, and relevant regulatory bodies on civil liability issues
- Engage in judicial advocacy through monitoring, reporting, and Amicus briefs
- Identify existing and emerging legislation affecting the state’s legal environment
- Execute lobbying strategy on priority affirmative and defensive legislation
- Collaborate with allied organizations and interest groups to advance the Institute’s objectives
Media
- Act as the spokesperson for the organization, including providing quotes and participating in interviews
- Supervise all media outreach, including traditional and social media platforms
- Develop and execute media/public relations strategy to ensure exposure for the organization and priority issues
Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal campaign finance and lobbying laws
- Manage the existing Political Action Committee including filings and disbursements
Membership/Development
- Lead all fundraising and member development activities
- Routinely communicate with members on developments and accomplishments
- Facilitate development of the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- 5 years of experience in government relations, state/federal advocacy, political campaigns, government, or a combination thereof.
- Experience leading an organization and/or managing teams.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communications skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite – Outlook, Word, Excel.
- Self-starter/motivator.
Preferences:
- Juris Doctorate,
- Experience as a practicing attorney
- MBA or MPA Degree
- Media experience
- Non-profit management experience
- Fundraising experience
- Experience working in a coalition with allied organizations
