Position Summary : The position is principally responsible for provisioningcustomers and maintaining the voice and data connectivity within a CiscoUnified Communications (UC) system environment and data-network environment.This includes configuration of customer VoIP and analog telephones andgateways, Unity Voicemail, troubleshooting customer and system problems,coordinate circuit installation and repairs with telecommunications providers.This position is responsible for performing adds, moves, and changes with telecommunicationscabling including terminating cabling on network patch panels and telephoneblocks, assisting the end-user customer device setup.
The position is responsible for collaboratingwith and supervising vendor technicians, managing the student employeetechnicians as well as providing technical guidance to more junior positions.The position exhibits good problem-solving ability and resourcefulness and iscompetent to work on fairly complex telecommunications issues with only generalsupervision.Essential Functions : 1. Responsible for managing and installing the campuswide voice-mail system, connecting data circuits, activating mailboxes andperforming backups of systems. Programs and installs new extensions, relocatesand changes programming of existing extensions.2. Repairs, monitors and reports problems with voicecircuits on NJIT UC system, Verizon and Windstream systems and repairs datacircuits.3. Coordinates with outside contractors to schedule forwire, HVAC and electrical installations. Oversees outside contractors duringinstallation in order to assure they meet outlined specifications. Escalateunresolved incidents internally or with external vendors.4. Responsible for activating high-speed ports,troubleshooting special circuits such as SIP, T1, ISDN, activating fiber-opticcabling, and coordinating repairs with appropriate vendors.5. Responsible for mounting and maintaining network andtelephone equipment in equipment racks located in IT rooms throughout thecampus. Terminate and test telephone and network cable on telephone blocks andnetwork patch panels.6. Help program, install and test ethernet connections,switches and electronics, for adds moves and changes as well as new buildingconstruction and renovation.7. Installing cabling for events and special projects.8. Evaluates and assesses all communications rooms oncampus for expansion of voice and data infrastructure.9. Troubleshoots and administers analog and Voice over IPphones with Cisco Unified Communications solutions, resolve any hardware andsoftware issues related to Cisco UC.10. Assists in evaluation and planning new servicesincluding hardware, software and new technologies related to UC. Participatesas a team member in large systems voice and data implementation projects.11. Training and supervising student employees with UCand Data projects.12. Maintains proper documentation for change control andfor audit purposes.13. Apply technical troubleshooting skills to testreported incident and resolve them in a timely manner.14. Plans for and responds to service outagesand other problems within the university enterprise IT infrastructure. ResolvesLevel I and Level II incidents and service requests reported to the IST ServiceDesk.Prerequisite Qualifications : - High School Diploma- A , Cisco UC training or comparable training orcertifications- 0-2 years of progressive experience in UnifiedCommunications / PBX user administration and data communications installation- Strong grasp of networking fundamentals- Excellent communication skills- At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position. Preferred Qualifications : - A Bachelor's degree in telecommunications or a related field.- Proficiency in Windows systems.- Experience with change control in an ITIL structure.
