Primary Care Medical Director

Overview:

The Primary Care Medical Director is responsible for departmental clinical leadership and oversight of providers to ensure high quality patient care, fiscal viability, and employee satisfaction.  This person also serves as a liaison between the provider group and hospital administration and will collaborate with the medical staff committees and individuals to optimize communication, efficiency and effectiveness of clinic services.  The leader will work to foster an environment of collegiality by role modeling the values of New London Hospital while setting clear expectations for team members to follow. They will also partner closely with the director of ambulatory services to create departmental goals and objectives that will advance and align with the priorities of New London Hospital.  The Primary Care Medical Director will report directly to the Chief Medical Officer and be responsible for the clinic leadership team consisting of the primary care medical director, the Newport Health Center (NHC) medical director and the clinical program director of quality initiatives.

 

Performance Expectation:

  1. Clinical Leadership and Oversight of Providers
      • Oversees all employed medical providers in the department.
      • Ensures compliance with all New London Hospital (NLH) policies and procedures.
      • Ensures that all providers are aware of, and in compliance with, NLH Medical Staff bylaws and Rules and Regulations.
      • Manages the performance of the department's employed providers in accordance with Human Resources policies.
      • Performs annual review of department's employed providers.
      • Reviews and approves the medical record-keeping practices of department providers, and insures it is in compliance with NLH policies as well as State and Federal regulations.
      • Maintains physician staffing schedules so that adequate coverage is ensured and patients are seen on a timely basis.
      • Approves any and all procedures and services which the department medical staff wishes to perform.
      • Participates in the recruitment and selection of providers and coordinates their orientation and integration into the department and NLH as a whole.
      • Manages/resolves conflicts among providers, and between providers and other groups and individuals.
      • Provides mentoring for the professional growth and development of providers.
      • Ensures that department providers attend mandatory training and education programs as determined by NLH.score: N/A

 

  1. Clinical Quality (clinical program director of quality initiatives will share these duties)
      • Responsible for oversight of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities. This includes any activities required for acquiring and maintaining Critical Access Hospital and Provider-Based Billing designations.
      • Responsible for assuring compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation.
      • Responsible for assuring adequate oversight of non-physician providers.
      • Responsible for assuring that all clinical policies are updated and current.
      • Ensures that all providers in department maintain complete, accurate and timely patient medical records.
      • Responsible for working with the quality team on addressing patient concerns about care in the NLH practices. Also, responsible for working with the leadership team on patient care concerns regarding the care of patients at NHC or pediatrics.

 

  1. Business Management
      • Collaborates with the director of ambulatory services and primary care leadership team to provide overall management of the clinic.
      • Provides input to director of ambulatory services and senior leadership regarding strategic planning for department.
      • Holds colleagues accountable to performance targets including, a fiscally responsible annual budget.
      • Provides practice managers and/or director of ambulatory services with input regarding performance of staff from perspective of providers.
      • Collaborates with Human Resources, COO and the CMO on provider compensation development and oversight.
  1. Clinical and Administrative Time
      • The Medical Director shall be employed as a physician with a minimum of 50% devoted to clinical care.
      • The Medical Director will have 25% administrative time dedicated to leadership of the department.
      • Is in good standing as an Active member of Medical Staff at NLH

 

Education and Licensure :

 Graduate of a four (4) year accredited medical school or equivalent required.

 Board certification or eligible required.

 Unrestricted and current license to practice medicine in the State of NH required.

 Current MD or DO and BLS

 Current DEA

 

Experience/Skills:

  • Minimum of two years of clinical practice required
  • Demonstrated leadership experience that focuses on people development, specifically training and developing clinical staff and colleagues
  • Highly motivated, flexible and adaptable to working in a team-based environment
  • Solid interpersonal skills with ability to communicate and build positive relationships with colleagues
  • Ability to positively interact with other clinicians, management and all levels of medical and non-medical professionals
  • Demonstrated competence in use of electronic health records as well as associated technology and applications
