Position Summary
Food and beverage servers are the first point of contact for customers in an eating establishment. Commonly referred to as waiters and waitresses, food and beverage servers are employed in a range of venues, from fine dining restaurants to casual eateries. The role consists of taking customers orders for food and drink, making recommendations regarding the menu and informing customers of daily specials.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of a food and beverage server vary depending on experience, age, location and employer. For example, those serving alcohol may be required to be 18 years or older.
- Escorting customers to tables.
- Taking customer orders.
- Monitoring customers' needs.
- Dealing with any problems or complaints.
- Clearing tables of empty glasses and dishes.
- Must be polite, courteous and outgoing.
- Must be able to listen carefully and take instruction.
- The ability to deal with problems sensitively is also required when dealing with customer complaints in room full of diners.
- Must have a good memory to avoid confusing orders and to recall faces, names and orders of frequent customers.
Position Summary
Preparing drinks for the servers to serve the patrons, may also help the bartender if he is too busy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Check customer identification when in doubt to ensure that the establishment does not served liquors to minors.
- Ensure that the drinks you serve conform to what the customer at the bar has ordered or expects.
- Serve liqueurs, wines, and bottled or draft beer.
- Take beverage, alcohol, wine and coffee orders from food serving staff or directly from patrons seated on bar stools at the counter.
- Assist the bartenders in limiting the alcoholic consumption of patrons by taking measures like persuading customers to stop drinking, or ordering taxis or arranging for transport of intoxicated patrons.
- Mix ingredients, such as liquor, soda, water, sugar, and bitters, in order to prepare cocktails and other drinks.
