JOB TITLE: Adult Education Instructor (Contract Educator)
DEPARTMENT: Corrections Department, Reentry Division
WAGE: Competitive, based on education and experience $48,000-$65,000 per
annum
WORK HOURS: Variable eight hours per day scheduled at discretion of Programs Manager
GENERAL SUMMARY:
· Through the Adult Education Instructor, New Mexico’s incarcerated population is afforded opportunities to gain knowledge and skills meaningful for their own personal growth and essential for their transition out into the community. The AE Instructor is responsible for providing comprehensive instructional and high-quality educational and academic services to the institution’s incarcerated population, including students with varying educational levels and abilities, in preparation for high school completion or high school equivalency exams. A flexible curriculum allows educators to creatively explore teaching goals and engage inmate personal development with generous preparation time. Resume must include month AND year dates to count towards experience calculation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· High School diploma, GED certification or equivalent
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
· Experience working with criminal justice populations
· 6 months prior experience related to the position
· Any involvement in education, tutoring, or training to include presentations and speaking in public
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· 90% indoor – 10% outdoor. Work is performed in an office and classroom setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer usage. Work is done inside the perimeter of an adult prison environment and includes daily contact with and supervision of inmates and is potentially a very dangerous environment. Some travel may be required.

70% rapid pace to meet deadlines – 30% at own pace
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
· Knowledge of subject areas in Reading/Writing, Science, Math, and Social Studies; of instructional methods, techniques, equipment and materials used in the area of specialization; of preparation and planning in course work; of sources of information and instructional materials; of teaching problems and conditions in correctional institutions.
· Ability to teach academic courses to include the five (5) basic ABE/HiSET areas (Reading, Writing, Science, Math, and Social Studies) and determine informal assessment methods and assist with testing.
· Ability to handle multiple demands and demonstrate flexibility with changing demands.
· Establish and maintain an effective and engaging learning environment, appropriate to the needs and capacities of the students.
· Establish and maintain relationships with facility administration, staff, incarcerated individuals, visitors and the general public.
· Ensure security of staff and incarcerated population by maintaining professionalism, ethical behavior, and situational awareness while interacting with incarcerated students.
· Develop and maintain a positive, collaborative relationship and regular communication with appropriate Education Department staff.
· Collaborate with team members on developing individualized education plans (IEP) for each IDEA-eligible student and with the Special Education Team on developing Adult Learning Assistance (ALA) plans for each identified student.
· Oversee the maintenance of accurate, complete and appropriate educational records, the preparation of reports as required by policy, regulations and procedure.
· Use verbal and written communication in an open, candid and consistent manner; explain concepts and procedures clearly and completely while maintaining attention and interest; displays sensitivity to the unique needs of NMCD student population.
· Maintain order and discipline in a learning situation, including the enforcement of instructional regulations by reporting on student’s behavior.
· Willingness to work evenings and weekends in order to accommodate the schedules of adult learners.
· Participate in building and implementing Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs for inmates.
· NMCD retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

· This position is designated as safety sensitive.

· Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
· Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S and have reached the age of majority.
· Willingness to work under potentially dangerous circumstances in a correctional facility and maintain strict fidelity to security protocols.
All of the above must be done in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
