Why does the job exist?
This position performs proficiency tests, standard materials characterizations, potential event exercises and real-world event response, and other sample analysis sent to the Chemical Threat Analytical Response (CTAR) section. Position will provide support to staff manager with supervision of staff, results reporting, quality control, and will assist in method validation/development.
How Does It Get Done?
The Chemical Threat Analytical Response (CTAR) Section, federally funded by the CDC, is one of 10 Level 1 laboratories in the Laboratory Response Network for Chemical Threats (LRN-C). It conducts proficiency tests, method validations, event responses, and chemical analyses of submitted samples.
Staff perform mass spectrometric analyses of blood, urine, and serum to detect chemical agents and their metabolites. They also screen unknown samples for hazardous chemicals. This role requires expertise in liquid and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, supply management, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting.
The Supervisor supports method development, grant management, and budget proposals. Clinical sample handling experience is required, and candidates must meet CLIA technical supervisor requirements.

The Centers for Disease Control - as part of the requirements contained within the Public Health Emergency Preparedness federal Grant for New Mexico and the State Biomonitoring Programs.
Ideal Candidate
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field with two years of laboratory experience in chemical analysis. Strong background in analytical chemistry and mass spectrometry. Experience testing blood, urine, or serum for chemical analytes using gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Skilled in separation science, method development, instrument maintenance, SOP writing, data review, and laboratory supervision.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in chemistry or closely related field, and four (4) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Capable of passing Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI) security clearance for access to laboratories holding Select Agents, as defined by 42CFR73, Possession, Use, and Transfer of Select Agents and Toxins. Must obtain Hepatitis B and Rabies vaccination, able to differentiate colors, use of sterile techniques, and good manual dexterity. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate. In state and out of state travel may be required. Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required. This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer. There will be extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies utilized. Work involves using high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high-pressure gas cylinders. Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
