What are the responsibilities and job description for the Benefits Administrator position at New Mexico Highlands University?
This position is responsible for overseeing NMHU’s employee benefits program. The Benefits Administrator will monitor the various plans and policies to ensure compliance with legal requirements and NMHU objectives. The Benefits Administrator will stay informed of industry changes and new developments to help NMHU keep up with best practice standards. Ensures maximum efficiency, cost-effectiveness, compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies; and consistency with the University’s overall mission, goals, and objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and administer the employee benefits package, including health, dental, vision, life, disability, FSA, retirement plans and COBRA.
- Monitor compliance with laws and regulations related to benefits.
- Establish and maintain relationships with external vendors and providers and ensure procedures are followed to minimize costs.
- Provide guidance regarding benefits enrollment and utilization.
- Manage day-to-day benefits administration, including enrollment, and changes.
- Design and execute employee communications relating to benefits.
- Monitor employee eligibility for benefits in accordance with company guidelines.
- Respond to inquiries, troubleshoot benefits issues, and resolve conflicts.
- Report benefits-related data and trends to senior leadership.
- Assist employees with accessing the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
- Coordinates Open Enrollment yearly.
- Conduct benefits audits as requested.
- Monitors and ensures NMHU compliance with various federal regulations and guidelines, including FMLA. COBRA, and ADA.
- Coordinates with State office(s) in negotiating premiums for various NMHU insurance and risk protection programs, i.e., health, dental, vision and life insurance, etc.; provides the finance department with cost projections for inclusion in the annual budget.
- Investigates and administers all Woker Compensation claims filed by NMHU employees; monitors payment of weekly indemnity benefits, medical expenses, etc.: reviews necessary medical treatment.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
- EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of relevant benefits experience.
- Education: Master’s Degree in related field.
- Experience: Three or more years of relevant benefits experience.
- Knowledge and experience in Human Resources and Payroll software. Preferred knowledge in SCT BANNER Human Resources module and Paycom.
- Considerable knowledge of employee benefits programs.
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; prepare and analyze comprehensive reports; maintain quality work productions while dealing with deadline pressures.
- Excellent problem-solving and time management skills.
- Ability to provide exceptional Customer Service.
- May be required to stand for long periods of time.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/ move up to 50 pounds or more.
- Works in an office with normal conditions.
- Noise level can vary from low to moderate.
- Limited overnight travel may be required – Occasionally
