New Mexico Junior College seeks a deeply committed and experienced academic leader to inspire, innovate, and support our students, deans, faculty, and staff on the pathway to ever-greater fulfillment of our mission, vision, and values. The Vice President for Instruction (VPI) will bring focus, research, motivation, and growth to our quest for teaching and learning that leads to student success, as demonstrated by course completion and certificate or degree attainment.
The VPI reports to the President, is a member of the Executive Cabinet, and serves on the President’s Council. To further the college-wide dedication to serving our students, the VPI will work collaboratively and creatively with the deans, faculty, support staff, and all members of the Executive Council, particularly the Vice President of Student Services, to ensure comprehensive support for all students.
Of specific focus will be:
New Mexico Junior College offers Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees and business and industry trade Certificates. In addition, the College offers nationally renowned NJCAA athletic programs in multiple women’s and men’s sports. NIRA governs the men’s and women’s rodeo programs. Through its outstanding programs, staff, and services, New Mexico Junior College fills a critical educational need for Lea County and the surrounding area by actively promoting success through learning.

- Promoting and supporting student success, engagement, and advocating for student needs.
- Providing strategic leadership in overarching academic affairs, including faculty recruitment, development, teaching, and committee assignments.
- Working closely with academic deans to support instructional initiatives and address faculty concerns.
- Promoting collaboration among deans, faculty, athletics, and student services to build strong and direct bridges toward successful persistence-to-completion for students.
- Enhancing and expanding High School Dual Enrollment partnerships to support teaching and learning while ensuring alignment with the College’s requirements.
- Fostering cross-collaborative engagement and support for credit-bearing instructional areas in Workforce Development.
- Advancing program assessment to drive new program development, curricular innovation, or potential program discontinuation.
- Utilizing data and knowledge of the NMJC community and culture to make informed decisions.
- Provide oversight of the college’s accreditation requirements from the Higher Learning Commission.
- Act as a liaison with NM HED to ensure compliance with state requirements and initiatives.
- Attending and presenting reports as requested to the New Mexico Junior College Board of Trustees and assigned Board committees.
- Developing and maintaining the Academic Unit budget.
- Serving on various campus committees as assigned.
- Performing other duties as assigned or required.
- Nothing contained herein shall limit the President in assigning the employee to any of the various college activities for which he/she would be qualified in order to meet the needs of New Mexico Junior College.
- Doctoral degree in Higher Education Leadership, the Ph.D. or other relevant terminal degree attainment preferred; Master’s degree required.
- At least five years of progressively responsible institutional experience, including four years supervising at the dean or higher level in the Academic Affairs arena, is required.
- Experience with comprehensive, rural community colleges is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with regional and program-level higher education accreditation processes.
