What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sustainability Hauler position at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival?
TIME FRAME: This is a short term, seasonal position.
DATE RANGE: April 7 - May 14, 2025
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Hauler plays a vital role in the sustainability operations at Jazz Fest, ensuring efficient waste management and recycling processes. Under the supervision of the Sustainability Operations Lead and Sustainability Coordinator, Haulers oversee the flow of materials in their designated zone, following a scheduled route to collect, top-sort, and transport recyclables to sorting stations and drop zones.
Haulers serve as key communicators between Roamers and Sorters, maintaining the efficiency of the festival’s waste management system. This role is physically demanding and requires strong teamwork, organization, and a commitment to sustainability. Haulers also act as sustainability ambassadors, educating attendees and crew on best waste management practices.
ESSENTIAL FUCTIONS:
Pre-Production:
- Retrieve and reset recycling receptacles along designated routes during festival setup.
- Conduct MOOP (Matter Out of Place) sweeps to maintain clean pathways.
- Transport active receptacles at the beginning and end of each workday.
Production:
- Complete frequent rounds to haul recyclables to designated sorting stations.
- Drag and lift recycling bags and bins to drop points.
- Work with Hauler Assistants to maintain receptacles and keep zones organized.
- Manage team members in your zone to ensure efficient workflow.
- Check in with vendors to assess hauling needs.
- Perform MOOP sweeps and clean parking areas during the event.
- Stage extra bags and tools as needed.
- If forklift certified, operate equipment to compact waste at the back-of-house sort station.
Post-Production:
- Assist with breakdown, cleanup, and inventory of waste management areas after the event.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Physically able to lift and carry 50 lbs. and work on foot for long shifts (10-12 hours).
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Forklift certification (preferred but not required).
- Passion for sustainability and waste reduction practices.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Using the Absentee Request Form, it is the responsibility of each employee and their supervisor to accurately report their absenteeism to the Festival Finance Office.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive issues.
- Give any document, computer program, design, or other intellectual property created for the Jazz Festival (and, therefore, belonging to the Jazz Festival) to the Festival through your supervisor or department head at the end of each production year, or upon request.
- Attend and complete any required training.
- Complete all required Feedback Forms and Final Reports.
