TITLE:          English/Language Arts Teacher for our New Recovery High School

 

The new regional recovery high school is a joint initiative of Waynesboro and Augusta County Public Schools. The school, which is set to open in Fall 2025, is funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Education. Recovery high schools provide a structured and supportive academic environment for students seeking recovery from substance use and co-occurring disorders, a critical resource for addressing the challenges faced by young people and their families.

 

The recovery high school represents a groundbreaking step for Waynesboro and Augusta County, addressing a critical need in the region. The school is poised to become a beacon of hope and support for students and families navigating the journey of recovery.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.
  2. Have demonstrated the professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and members of the community.
  3. Must have demonstrated success in working with a variety of students.
  4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  5. Be willing to teach a variety of English/Language Arts curriculum across all grades levels in high school.

REPORTS TO:         Building Principal

 

JOB GOAL:

To help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible men and women.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  2. Plans a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  3. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  4. Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  5. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  6. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
  7. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  8. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  9. Meets the accommodations for the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  10. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  11. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  12. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedures and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  13. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  14. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  15. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and use hands and fingers to handle and feel.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

200-day contract.  Salary and work year are to be established by the Board.  The salary listed reflects the approved salary scale for the 2024-2025 school year and will be updated once the Waynesboro School Board approves the FY26 budget.

 

EVALUATION:

The performance of this job will be evaluated following provisions of the Board’s policy on the Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
