Job Title: Homeless Services Shelter Advocate
The Shelter Advocate will provide support in our Men’s Emergency Shelter, Joshua House. The Advocate will provide supportive services to all guests in a manner consistent with established protocols.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advocate will create a safe and welcoming environment for guests by greeting guests, responding to guest request(s) for assistance or supplies needed from the office/storage areas, and ensuring clients are provided a high quality of emotional support.
- Complete intakes and orientate guests to the shelter as needed.
- To ensure cleanliness and order of the shelter desk area, Advocate will restock supplies as needed, sweep the main area, and keep the desk area free of any clutter, and any other task needed to maintain order.
- Advocate will complete a scheduled walkthrough of the entire campus.
- As tasks at shelter vary each day, Advocate should assist in providing crisis and conflict intervention services.
- We believe teamwork leads to better quality services. Advocates should consult on-call staff in handling emergencies, documenting appropriately and timely. Advocates should also inform day staff about night shift activity through email.
- To ensure desk coverage, Advocate will be on time for their scheduled shift and complete their entire shift without leaving the premises.
- Assist with special projects and tasks assigned by the Shelter Director or Site Director.

Qualifications & Experience:
- Desire to gain experience working with the unhoused community.
- Attentive to detail, demonstrate emotional maturity, flexibility in management of responsibilities, ability to work independently, and creativity problem solve to meet needs of clients.
- Ability to respect and adapt to differences in perspective, backgrounds, beliefs and needs; Ideal candidate should have the ability to prioritize tasks, above average skills in time management, and adaptability to unplanned situations.
- Any combination of education, experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position is qualifying.
- Preferred at least two years of experience in the social service field, preferably with homeless consumers or veterans.
- Excellent verbal and written skills are required.
- Must have own car and clean driving record, present a driver’s license and current insurance on hiring day.
- Experience with substance abuse programs is desired.
- Must provide reliable current references.
Education :
- High school Diploma or Equivalent.
- Social Services Degree or Lived Experiences Preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour
Expected hours: 35 – 40 per week
