The Crisis Behavioral Health Associate responds promptly when children, families and adults are experiencing crisis symptoms that put them at great risk for hospitalization or other higher out of home levels of care. The Associate promotes crisis de-escalation and secures alternative options that maintain functioning. This position is tasked with crisis interventions in the community at the location where the crisis occurs. It is designed to prevent hospitalization and out of home care which includes problem solving, mitigating factors that put individuals at increased risk, and enhance protective factors. This position requires a flexible work schedule and is part of a team that provides round the clock access to crisis services.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Arts or Sciences degree in a human service field
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program for a master's degree or doctoral degree in Psychology, Social work; or in a behavioral science field that leads to a credential or license; or currently working toward a specialized credential or license in the field of mental health or substance use disorder
- Must have a collaborative educational agreement with the graduate program and the employer
- Master's degree and pursuing clinical license or enrolled in a master's degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or closely related field
- Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable operating transportation, and proof of current auto insurance
Preferred Education and Experience
- Experience working with individuals and families who experience various mental, behavioral, and substance abuse conditions
- Working toward Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, Psychology, Social Work or closely related field
- Experience and/or desire to work with community partners (i.e. police, hospital emergency room staff, etc.) to help assess and stabilize individuals and families experiencing a behavioral health crisis
Essential Functions

- Respond to crisis events promptly.
- Assess crisis situations and engage as appropriate in variety of settings within the community (i.e. hospital emergency room, police station, etc.).
- Provide brief crisis interventions that help de-escalate crisis situations and promote stability.
- Assess crisis situations through risk assessment, management, crisis prevention, intervention and engage as appropriate to help de-escalate crisis situations and promote stability.
- Consults with Crisis Outreach Team Lead on clinical issues that may be relevant as a matter of routine when carrying out crisis interventions.
- Coordinate referral and transition for engaged clients once stabilization is established.
