A New York City Council Member’s district office is seeking a Chief of Staff. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for overseeing office operations, managing strategic

priorities and ensuring efficient execution of the office is legislative, budgetary, and district initiatives. The ideal candidate will provide high-level support to the Elected Official, oversee Staff performance, and serve as a liaison with government agencies and community organizations.

SALARY RANGE:

$ 90,000 to $110,000

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Office Management & Operations

  • Oversee cross-functional initiatives and office-wide projects.
  • Implement protocols, best practices, and procedures for efficiency.
  • Delegate tasks and provide guidance to staff members.
  • Recommend hiring decisions, allocate workloads, and manage daily operations.
  • Administer internal budgets and ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Manage staff schedules, timesheets, and work cycles, including evenings and weekends.
  • Foster strong internal relationships to enhance office productivity.

2. Strategic Planning & Member Support

  • Work with the Elected Official to establish strategic priorities and success metrics.
  • Manage the Member’s schedule in collaboration with the Executive Assistant.
  • Act as a gatekeeper to prioritize engagements and decision-making participation.
  • Keep the Member informed about office culture, projects, and proposals.
  • Aggregate and report updates from different office departments.

3. Policy & Initiative Oversight

  • Collaborate with staff to refine and implement strategic goals.
  • Oversee program management, initiative execution, and performance metrics.
  • Enhance internal communications to ensure staff alignment on priorities.
  • Partner with external organizations to advance office initiatives.
  • Track progress of agencies where the Member has oversight responsibilities.

4. Community Engagement & Liaison Duties

  • Attend meetings with community organizations, schools, and civic groups.
  • Act as a primary point of contact for community concerns and updates.
  • Provide reports to the office and community stakeholders.
  • Address and mitigate issues affecting district organizations.

5. Event & Program Coordination and Communications Oversight

  • Identify key community issues and collaborate with staff to address them.
  • Organize and execute town halls, roundtables, and commemorative events.
  • Conduct outreach to maximize attendance at office programs.
  • Prepare briefing materials for the Elected Official.
  • Review all Communications output (including press-releases, social media posts, weekly e-blasts, etc.) and ensure it is timely, as well as technically and factually accurate.

6. Government & Agency Relations

  • Serve as a primary liaison between the office and city agencies.
  • Develop innovative solutions to district issues.
  • Maintain progress reports on agency initiatives and challenges.
  • Escalate unresolved matters for further action.

7. Representation at Events & Meetings

  • Represent the Elected Official at public functions and meetings.
  • Provide office updates, distribute materials, and collect constituent information.
  • Report key takeaways from attended meetings to office staff.

8. Additional Duties

  • Provide regular updates on assigned responsibilities.
  • Communicate challenges and successes effectively.
  • Work collaboratively with the team to ensure office efficiency.
  • Take proactive measures to address and resolve issues.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in government, community affairs, or public policy.
  • Strong leadership, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Familiarity with legislative processes, city agencies, and district issues.
  • Experience in budget management and office administration.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
