Senior Director of Finance

Role Summary : The Senior Director of Finance, reporting to the CEO, oversees all financial operations for NYC Outward Bound Schools, ensuring sound financial management, transparency, and compliance with regulatory requirements. The Senior Director of Finance is responsible for leading and developing the financial management strategy, including accountability for the financial health and stability of the organization in conjunction with the CEO. The Senior Director of Finance is responsible for developing and executing financial strategies, managing budgets, developing and refining financial forecasting models, and ensuring all accounting and payroll procedures are effective, efficient, and compliant. The role will work closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other senior staff to align financial goals with the organization’s mission. Key responsibilities include leading financial planning and analysis, ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, managing cash flow, overseeing audits, and driving financial sustainability. The Senior Director of Finance will also provide leadership to a small finance team, ensuring that systems and processes are efficient, effective, and aligned with best practices in the non-profit sector.
Essential Responsibilities :
Financial Planning : Strategy & Budget
- Develop, along with the CEO and leadership team, financial strategy and plans to support the organization’s growth
- Set clear objectives and measures for financial performance of the organization
- Oversee and direct the preparation of the annual budget, including developing functional budget templates.
- Oversee implementation of financial plans and annual budgets for each department
- Develop multi-year budgets; forecast revenue, expense, and cash flow; and conduct program margin analyses to compliment operations, programs, and business plans
- Oversee, along with the CEO, all investment accounts through current investment advisors. Work with advisors on ensuring timely consistent reporting, investment activity, and cash flow needs, etc.
- Plan, develop, and maintain a capital improvement budget for any necessary repairs of physical facilities aligned with the fiscal capacity of the organization
Financial Operations : Accounting & Finance Functions
Oversee all accounting and finance functions of the organization; ensure team’s timely completion of monthly closing process; perform advanced accounting tasks; and oversee and participate in preparation of related financial and cash flow statement and reconciliation of accountsAssess the timeliness and accuracy of tasks performed; monitor process, progress and results and design feedback loops into workEnsure all fiscal practices meet the highest standard of integrity and comply with GAAP and other industry standardsImplement financial policies and procedures that maintain an effective internal control environment with proper segregation of dutiesContinually work toward promotion of efficiency and effectiveness of all finance functions, via process and workflow improvements and system upgrades, as well as integrationsNegotiate and manage all banking relationshipsSupervise annual audit preparationSupervise and support the preparation of annual 990Provide accounting and financial assistance to other departments and train staff on fiscal procedures and budget management, as neededLead, along with respective chairs, all Board of Director committee matters pertaining to Finance, Audit and Investments, including setting forth the agenda, presentation materials, and ensuring timely scheduling of all meetings. Serve as the finance representative at the committee and board meetingsFinancial Monitoring, Analysis & Reporting
Produce and analyze multi-year financial statements and communicate trends and emerging issues as necessary; including cash flow projections and reportingAnalyze budget variances and work cross-functionally to address any significant differencesSupport senior leadership to develop forecasts, pricing structures for programs and financial models for new growth initiativesDevelop sophisticated reporting (narratives, financials, dashboards, etc.) to communicate financial results and trendsProvide regular updates to various internal and external stakeholders on all finance functions and activities as agreed upon with the CEO. Attend and present at leadership group, board, and board committee meetingsConduct multi-year and project-specific analyses to inform future planning and strategiesEnsure all financial issues are accurately tracked and resolvedCoordinate with the Development / Advancement team on grant management and the appropriate tracking of fundraising activitiesDevelop budgets and reports for NYC Department of Education (DOE) contractsLeadership / Management
