Job Description:

The Office of the Chief of Crime Control Strategies is seeking Crime Analysts to perform in depth and sophisticated analysis of precinct crime conditions and author reports for this office and their respective precinct and borough commanders. Crime Analysts support crime analysis at precincts and boroughs citywide.
Crime Analysts Assigned To Crime Control Strategies Have The Responsibility Of Performing In-depth And Sophisticated Analysis Of Precinct Crime Conditions And Authoring Reports For This Office, Their Assigned Precinct And Respective Borough Commanders. Crime Analysts Support Crime Analysis At Precincts And Boroughs City-wide. Under Supervision, The Selected Crime Analysts Will:
- Perform confidential analytical work by reviewing, examining and compiling highly sensitive and complex data regarding criminal activities and investigations.
- Maintain highly complex data bases, maps, charts and reports utilizing state of the art spreadsheets, databases, GIS mapping and link analysis software applications.
- Create tables, charts and graphs and perform analysis to demonstrate relationships between entities and events. Produce computer generated maps displaying criminal activity.
- Develop statistical data resources to assist in proactive and targeted investigations, preventative enforcement and education; identifying patterns, trends and criminal organizations. Identify known and repeat offenders.
- Recognize and identify conditions, trends, and patterns in area of areas of specialization.
Various locations throughout the five boroughs of New York City.

Minimum Qualifications
- A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field; and one year of satisfactory full-time experience in the analysis and/or research of data related to crime, criminals, criminal intelligence, and/or other social sciences in a police, judicial, or other criminal justice setting; or
- A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field; and a Master’s degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field.
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, three additional years of full time qualifying experience as described in (1) above; or two years of full time qualifying experience as a Crime Analyst Assignment Level I.
Special Note:
To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, five additional years of full time qualifying experience as described in (1) above, or two years of full time qualifying experience as a Crime Analyst Assignment Level II.
Preferred Skills
The Crime Analyst must have strong communication (oral, written and visual), creative and analytical skills as well as great technical/computer skills Analyst needs to be able to locate & interpret data and must be able to repackage and present it in a way that can be easily understood by others. They should have a passion for research and a genuine desire to assist and support law enforcement in preventing and solving crimes.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
