Responsibilities

The Police Commissioner's Office is seeking a Deputy Chief of Staff reporting to the Chief of Staff, who will coordinate and advance the work of the Department's executive leadership. The position will serve as trusted advisor to the Chief of Staff and represent executive leadership in delegated projects and initiatives designed to achieve the Police Commissioner's priorities and objectives. Reporting directly to the Chief of Staff, the incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • On behalf of the Chief of Staff, participate in high-priority projects and initiatives designed to achieve the Department's mission; build and maintain successful working relationships and coordinate with a wide-range of offices, staff, and stakeholders, internal and external to the Department.
  • Ensure that matters requiring the attention of the Chief of Staff and other executive leadership are thoroughly developed, researched, and evaluated; and respond to routine inquiries for the Chief of Staff, where appropriate and when necessary.
  • Anticipate, identify, and troubleshoot issues of concern or significance; exercise discretion to provide timely information and necessary updates across multiple stakeholders.
  • Research, write, edit and/or coordinate preparation of public statements of the Police Commissioner, special reports, briefings, and presentations; conceive, craft, and edit messages, correspondence, and other communication on behalf of the Chief of Staff.
  • Participate in a variety of meetings and other events involving Departmental planning, policy development, and problem resolution as a member of senior staff.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and three years full- time satisfactory professional experience related to the projects and policies to be studied in the particular position, including eighteen months of experience in a managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity.
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” above; however, all candidates must possess eighteen months of experience in a managerial, consultative, administrative or supervisory capacity as described above.

Preferred Skills: - Comprehensive knowledge of Department operations and policymaking processes. - Extensive knowledge of the New York State Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, NYC Administrative Code, and other relevant local, state, and federal criminal laws. - Exceptional interpersonal, organizational, strategic planning, and critical thinking skills, and adaptability to meet changing demands. - Ability to gather data, provide analysis, and prepare reports, as well as an ability to perform complex tasks and prioritize multiple projects. - Superior writing, research, and oral communication skills. - Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality. - Strong ability to identify, analyze, and address a wide variety of issues and problems in a high-intensity environment.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
