The New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) is a not-for-profit independent corporation dedicated to increasing public awareness about problem and disordered gambling and advocating for support services and treatment for persons adversely affected by problem gambling. NYCPG was incorporated in 1994, and today, is funded by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). We strive to meet the ongoing and evolving need to address problem gambling in NYS as gambling and the associated problems continue to expand in various forms throughout the state.

Position Summary:

The New York Council on Problem Gambling is seeking an Executive Director who is passionate about leading operations, fostering growth, and driving the mission to assist those struggling with gambling addiction in New York. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for NYCPG staff, programs, administration, expansion, and execution of its mission. The ED will maintain deep knowledge of the field, core programs, operations, and business plans.

This full-time exempt position reports to a supportive and professional Board of Directors. The Executive Director will be a New York state resident and may work a hybrid/remote schedule from the Council’s offices in Albany, NY. The ED has overall management responsibility for an organization with a $7 million annual budget, and 37 full-time employees.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program evaluation, and consistent quality of communications and systems.
  • Advocate at all levels of NY State government for effective prevention and treatment services. Interface directly and maintain collaborative relationships with funding agencies.
  • Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors. Actively engage and energize NYCPG Board members and partnering organizations, including the National Council on Problem Gambling.
  • Develop and implement long-term strategic plans and periodic short-term tactical plans to ensure execution of the mission in collaboration with the Board. Provide periodic updates on progress against established plans.
  • Provide ongoing management and oversight of NYCPG’s financial function. Ensure compliance with funding contracts, regulations of oversight bodies, and general state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain a high-performance senior management team. Foster a positive and engaging workplace culture, and maintain equitable compensation and performance management systems.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as determined by the Board of Directors.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree, preferably in social or behavioral sciences (e.g. social work, sociology, public health, etc.). A Bachelor’s degree and substantial relevant experience may be considered.
  • At least 10 years of experience working in the problem gambling field is strongly preferred.
  • Professional certification in the field (CPC, CPGC, CASAC-G) is desirable.
  • Experience in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Strong marketing, and public relations experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to handle a flexible schedule for a variety of obligations, meetings and organization events after normal business hours.
  • Remote / hybrid office schedule available. Position requires a NY state residency.
  • Must have a clean driving record, and successfully complete a criminal background and other pre-employment screening.
  • Ability to travel throughout New York state to regional offices and various events.
