Job Description:

The New York County District Attorney’s Office (DANY) is seeking a Victim Services Advocate to join its Survivor Services Bureau (SSB) as part of the newly established Early Engagement Team (EET). This innovative team, within the Special Victims Bureau, is focused on providing proactive support in intimate partner violence cases through pre-arrest investigations. The EET ensures that survivors receive immediate and comprehensive access to essential services and resources, helping them navigate the complex legal and emotional challenges they face.

In this position, the Victim Services Advocate will provide a full range of services to survivors of intimate partner violence, witnesses, and their families. These services may include short-term crisis intervention, community referrals, orientation to the criminal justice system, case status updates, and court support. The EET analyst will divide their time between the downtown office and the Washington Heights office.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting heavy volume of follow up calls and maintaining on-going contact to ensure the clients are receiving support and services.
  • Explaining the criminal justice system and providing case information to survivors.
  • Assisting with emergency safety planning
  • Serving as a liaison between survivors and the members of the EET prior to an arrest and facilitating communication with the assigned Assistant District Attorney throughout the post-arrest process.
  • Ensuring all victims, witnesses, and their families are connected with SSB concrete and therapeutic services.
  • Partnering with advocates from outside agencies to coordinate essential services and support for survivors.
  • Assisting with orders of protection, supporting depositions, and registration for notification of inmate release.
  • Providing support and accompaniment during Criminal Justice proceedings.
  • Participating in community presentations.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

In addition to the Minimum Qualification Requirements, candidates must possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and one 1-2 years of experience in relevant field or equivalent.

Preferred Requirements/Skills:

  • Master's or Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, victim advocacy, or a closely related field; supplemented by 3-5 years of experience in social work, counseling, or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
  • Thorough knowledge of: Crime victim advocacy, criminal justice system procedures and methods; post-traumatic crisis intervention; recordkeeping techniques.
  • Experience in program evaluation, conducting needs assessments, developing, and enhancing community collaborations.
  • Ability to handle and resolve emergency situations, assist victims in trauma either in person or over the phone while maintaining composure.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, problem-solving, oral, and written communications skills.
  • Ability to foster good working relationship within the community and with external community-based agencies.

  • Shifts could vary between 8:30am – 4:30pm, 9am – 5pm, 9:30am-5:30pm, 10am – 6pm, 10:30am – 6:30pm.
  • Overtime may be required, including nights and weekends.

Additional Information:

  • Current office employees: To be eligible for a transfer or promotion, staff must have already served at least one (1) year in their current unit/bureau/department and be in good standing. In addition, must meet the minimum and additional qualifications of the position.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required for this position.
  • Looking for candidates who could commit to one (1) year in the hiring unit.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  • High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above.
