Overview

The Advisory Dean Program ("ADP" or "Program") Of New York Medical College (NYMC), School of Medicine (SOM) is established as an integral component of student life in providing longitudinal career advisement, coaching, mentoring, teaching related to career development, and reinforcement of the importance of student mental health and wellness. In partnership with trained Advisory Deans ("AD"), the Program is managed by the Advisory Dean Program Director who reports to the Dean of Students within the Office of Student Affairs. ADs report directly to the Advisory Dean Program Director. All students enrolled in the NYMC SOM M.D. Degree Program are assigned an AD. ADs engage in the provision of the components of the Program for ~ 20 students per class for a total of ~ 80 students. The AD provides recurring group- and individual sessions with students throughout the academic year. ADs are also expected to participate in ongoing professional development sessions sponsored by the Program in the Office of Student Affairs. The expected time commitment is approximately one day per week in aggregate per academic year.

Responsibilities

  • Provides group- and individual student coaching and counseling, as appropriate, in relation to:Career exploration and career decisions; teaches students to utilize the AAMC Careers in Medicine Toolbox to assist in making informed decisions around fitness and competitiveness for students' specialty considerations and selections.
  • Student research exploration, service opportunities and clinical electives selection including fourth-year elective planning.
  • Residency application materials and supporting documents, including review and feedback on applications.
  • Student academic and personal challenges; maintains proficient working knowledge of NYMC student resources on campus and makes appropriate referrals to central resource Offices (Student Mental Health and Wellness, Academic Support, Disability, etc.) and personnel (Dean, Students, etc.) in accordance with NYMC and SOM guidelines, policy and procedures; actively seeks support regarding knowledge gaps, etc. from supervisor and/or Dean, Students. 
  • Provides longitudinal student mentorship and advisement through participation in the M.D. Degree Program transition programs and ceremonies throughout the academic year, including student professional development programs delivered by the ADP.
  • Engages in mentorship relationship with students that model respect, trust, and professional interactions attributed to the M.D. profession.
  • Participates in required ADP professional development delivered by the Program and the Office of Student Affairs and maintains documents and records according to Program guideline.
  • Seeks to understand the quality of NYMC SOM student life and the ADP, both formally and informally through iterative feedback and to promote program assessment and quality improvement.
  • Maintains accurate and current records of individual student encounters, as well as group meetings and activities.
  • Participates in the production of letters of recommendations and the Medical Student Performance Evaluation, as requested.
  • Performs additional duties as requested by the Dean of Students and/or Advisory Dean Program Director.

Qualifications

Education requirement: Terminal degree: M.D., D.O. required.

Licenses or certifications: NYS license and Board Certification in field of specialization, as appropriate.

Technical/computer skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, etc.); other software and platforms as directed/requested of the Office of Student Affairs.

Prior experience: At least five (5) years of working experience in an academic setting; prior experience working with medical students in an educational setting preferred.
