Role Summary :

The Head of Architecture will define and execute the architectural vision and technical direction for NYSHEXs platform, with a critical focus on site reliability and scalability . You will lead the architecture, design, and development of systems that are not only reliable and secure but also ready to scale as our business grows. Partnering with cross-functional teams, youll play a pivotal role in ensuring our platform remains stable under high demand and adaptable to future needs.

This role reports directly to our CTO, out of the NYC office. This role is a hybrid role working Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday in the NYC office while Thursday and Friday are remote.

Key Responsibilities :

Architectural Leadership for Reliability and Scalability : Develop and implement architectural standards that prioritize system stability, scalability, and fault tolerance. Focus on high-availability design patterns that ensure uninterrupted platform performance.
Full-Stack Strategy with Reliability in Mind : Oversee the design and execution of end-to-end systems with a focus on reliability and performance. Collaborate with engineering teams to build an infrastructure that meets stringent reliability standards and handles rapid scaling requirements.
Team Enablement & Reliability Culture : Act as a servant leader to global agile scrum teams, promoting a reliability-first mindset and enabling them with the tools and guidance necessary to uphold high standards of performance.
Roadmap & Scalability Alignment : Work closely with engineering, product, and cross-functional stakeholders to define an architectural roadmap that supports both immediate scalability needs and long-term growth.
Technical Oversight for High Reliability : Provide strategic input on system architecture, data management, and operational standards that enhance platform reliability. Offer technical oversight on implementing fault-tolerant systems and redundancy where necessary.
Documentation & Standards for Scalable Solutions : Develop, maintain, and enforce standards and best practices that focus on reliable, consistent, and high-performing infrastructure, guiding teams in building for scale.

Qualifications :

Educational Background : BS or MS degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

Experience :

15 years of experience in software product development, with at least 5 years hands-on in data / application architecture, emphasizing site reliability and scalable design.

Proven track record in architect roles focused on large-scale, data-backed software services and applications.

Currently spending up to 50% of their time on hands-on coding of early POCs, reference implementations and in some instances taking designs and building them into final products in collaboration with agile teams.

Technical Expertise :

Strong knowledge of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) with extensive experience applying DDD patterns in software development.

Deep understanding of Microservices Architecture, Data Mesh, and Cloud-Native Architecture.

Skilled in System Design and building highly reliable systems with a focus on operational excellence.

10 years of hands-on software development experience in building high quality, performant software products at scale using majority of the key technologies below :

Backend : Java / J2EE, Python, Scala.

Frontend : Angular, ReactJS, Next.js.

Data / Database : Distributed data processing frameworks, PostgreSQL, Aurora, MongoDB.

Cloud : AWS, Cloud-native orchestration tools and services.

Data and Stream Processing : PL / SQL, Kafka, Informatica, and other tools for high-performance data flow.

Information Security : SonarQube, AWS Inspector, Blackduck.

Application Monitoring : Splunk, DataDog, New Relic, Prometheus, Grafana.

Compliance : Experience with compliance standards such as SOC2, ISO 27001, GDPR

DevOps and CI / CD Knowledge :

Extensive experience with CI / CD practices and tooling to automate deployment pipelines.

Proficient in containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) for scalable deployment and orchestration.

Data and Cloud Proficiency :

Comprehensive knowledge of data engineering (ETL / ELT, data modeling), data governance (classification, cataloging, lineage), and batch / real-time streaming platforms (e.g., Airflow, Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, dbt).

Familiarity with data storage and processing services in the cloud.

Web and API Development :

Proficient in Web Services (REST), API Design, ORM, and frameworks such as Spring MVC.

Skilled in Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) for creating modular, interoperable services.

Refactoring and Architecture Simplification :

Proven experience in refactoring software to improve performance, scalability, and maintainability.

Skilled in simplifying complex architectures to enhance system reliability, reduce technical debt, and improve developer productivity.

Strong ability to identify and eliminate redundancies within software components, data flows and infrastructure topologies to drive effective and efficient technology spend.

Soft Skills :

Strong communication skills with the ability to convey architectural vision to stakeholders at all levels.

Business acumen to balance and bridge technical and business priorities effectively.

Proven ability to collaborate and influence, recognized as a valuable partner across business and technology teams.
