Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Library Assistant 1 position in the New York State Library. The New York State Library has 19 million items in 76 different collections shelved on 96 miles of shelving, which is located on eight different floors of the Cultural Education Center. The Library’s collections contain books, maps, journals, microfilm, microfiche, US government documents, New York State documents, international documents, CD-ROMs, patents, pamphlets, and newspapers.Under the supervision of the Library Assistant 2, the Library Assistant 1 will be responsible for the daily operation and activities on one floor of the Library Stacks (5th, 6th, 8th or Basement) and will directly supervise staff assigned to that floor. The Library Assistant 1 will be responsible for ensuring that materials are retrieved from the Library’s collections for onsite and off-site customers accurately and in a timely manner, and that Library materials are filed correctly. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Manages the daily operation and activities on one floor of the Library stacks, including both public services and stack maintenance activities;
- Directly supervises the 1 - 2 Office Assistant 1s assigned to one floor of the library stacks. Responsibilities include : training, monitoring and evaluating work performance, assigning and reviewing work, scheduling, resolving problems, reviewing and correcting time sheets and counseling;
- Retrieves materials from the Library stacks for on-site and off-site customers;
- Staffs the seventh floor Circulation or Paging Desk for at least one hour a day;
- Reviews “unfilled” Interlibrary Loan requests to determine why the requests were not filled;
- Sorts and shelves Library materials;
- Ensures that materials are stored or housed properly on the shelves;
- Shifts collections, as necessary; and
- Performs other tasks, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : NY HELPS This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. For 55b / c appointment, candidates must possess the minimum qualifications, a current 55b / c eligibility letter and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility.
