Duties Description

  • Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance repair work including carpentry, plumbing and electrical maintenance.
  • Ability to build, repair and install such items as counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, windows, building framework, roofs, ceiling and floor tiles and trim while following verbal or written instructions utilizing the tools of the carpentry trade and following standard carpentry techniques according to NYS Building Codes.
  • Perform general millwork; may build cabinets, furniture and other wooden equipment in the shop using woodworking machines. Maintain shop machinery.
  • May conduct inspections of the facility to determine maintenance needs and recommend priorities for repair based on the nature of the maintenance problem.
  • Will be required to effectively communicate with supervisors and other trades workers both when receiving and providing direction.
  • Retrieve daily assignments and track accountable hours using the AiM work management system. Submit accurate and proper documentation in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.Operational Needs :
  • Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New York State motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Asbestos certification required within 90 days of appointment as well as compliance with all related PESH / OSHA regulations.
  • Able to work at heights using ladders, scaffolding, platform lifts, boom lifts, etc.
  • Able to operate a variety of forklifts (OSHA certification provided after appointment).
  • Able to lift a minimum of 80 lbs.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and applicable building codes and regulations.
  • Able to work independently and perform duties at the journeyman level.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, OR equivalent program

  • such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.
  • Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint / schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.Application Process - Candidates are required to provide specific, verifiable information about their qualifying experience with the Application for Posted Position (ADM 227). This information should be on the letterhead of the employer under whom the qualifying experience was gained and include names and titles of supervisors, duties performed during the training period and specific dates of employment and be signed by that employer.
  • Candidates qualifying through the completion of appropriate course work should include a copy of their transcript or listing of course work completed.
  • A copy of a trades union card is acceptable documentary proof of qualification.
  • Candidates who do not submit appropriate documentary proof that they meet the minimum qualifications will not be considered for appointment. Per Agreement between the Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. and the State of New York, Article 45 (d) the requirement to prove qualification shall rest with the employee.
